Description This is my mom. I referenced photos of her from the old fashioned album I made a few years ago. It didn't seem right to keep all my photos in a box... I've never really painted in this style in earnest. I'm proud of a lot of it, but some of it could be a lot better.

Those flowers are Cherokee Roses , and yes, that's a hoop wrapped in leather as a framing device, like the kind people use to make dream catchers (and other things). I intended to incorporate other symbols, like the quartered circle, or medicine wheel, and elk teeth (instead of pearls), but I ran out of time. The bird is an American goldfinch, and the feathers in her hair are eagle feathers (big and small), brown thrasher feathers, and bluejay feathers .

Any input is appreciated.

Aheh, I wouldn't be comfortable sharing photos of my mom without her permission, but thank you for the compliment.

I've seen a lot of good pictures in my time. This may not be as complex as some of them, as dramatic and high class, but it's so wonderful in its simplicity that I must say, this is one of my favorite pictures of all time I have never said that before and I do not take those words lightly.

Were you to consider selling this print as a t-shirt or a poster, I would be thrilled to have the opportunity to buy it

Hurrah!

I'm very glad to hear so It's a stupendous piece filled with strong symbolism, and the strong relations between the colors is very pleasing and easy on the eyes. It's all-around nice to look at and I would love to be able to wear or display it somehow ^^

This is very beautiful I learned alot about body composition from a book i have and it turns out many of the greats paint people slightly out of proportion and can still make it work i agree that the hand is not in proportion as u look at it as a single thing but if you take it as part of the whole picture i think it works very nicely -just btw I'm a little cherokee too and so i realy like art like this

This is quite beautiful, and your mom must have been so touched that you spent so much time on it The only thing I'd comment on would probably be the feathers. Having no experience with wearing them, I'm not quite sure if the woman can actually wear that many and that much. But I think it adds a lot of flavor to the picture, so even if she couldn't, I wouldn't change it. Nice work!

Cola82 In reply to catherinejao [2009-05-19 21:40:00 +0000 UTC]

Heh, the feathers aren't based on any real head dress. I put them there purely for reasons of composition and prettiness. Thanks so much for stopping by to comment.

Cola82 In reply to Tuchesuavae [2009-05-02 19:51:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, this is 2009 and we live in Oregon. Her being Cherokee doesn't mean she has to abide by rules that were only relevant when Cherokee men were still going to war against other tribes and we've never lived on a reservation anyway. I don't think anyone will mind.

Thanks for the kind words.

Wow... Your mother is a gorgeous woman.

This is so beautiful... I can't even imagine how she reacted to it. X3 That really is the sweetest thing though... Just the symbolism in this picture alone is enough to fall in love with this piece.
I'd love to list everything I love about this but... that would just take way too long. XD So instead I'll show my love for it with a fav. =3

Wow, your mother is so beautiful. Epically so. I didn't know you were Cherokee. I'm sure she'll be most chuffed with it, it such a well thought out image. I don't know what to speak about in sprecific, because all the details are really pleasing to the eye. Masterful job.

I'm kind of proud of my reputation of being a good gift giver. I'm certainly not reliable in the sense that I give a gift every year or every occasion, but when I do, I try to make it count.
