This is beautiful. Dragonscale is one of those weaves that just seems to be the bane of my existence. I have two pieces of it started and I keep putting them down to work on other things.

Very cool.

Thanks! ^_^ Keep at it and you'll finish the weave in no time! It's worth it.

for sure, but i want to do a tunic... yes, i'm nuts.

I actually calculated out the cost and time required to do that once...fairly staggering. Even with how quickly I can power through the weave now it's more than I wish to do when I could just make a ton of bracelets to sell instead! I am planning on making a tunic with a different weave after we finish this big show in May, though. We'll see how ambitious I get, a Kingsmaille hauberk is looking mighty fine in my imagination...

Also, weaves should hang sideways for tunics. Unfortunately, this makes Dragonscale look significantly worse (imho). So it isn't really practical anyway. You CAN do it the normal way but it really isn't recommended. Meh. xD

it's all for show. i wanted to reference scale without doing scale maille.
i may experiment anyway. but thanks much for the advice!

Definitely planning on it!! Will post photos for sure ^^
What size rings did you use for this one? I'm probably going to go pretty small - 20 gauge 1/8" and 3/16".

coldfirecustoms In reply to ArmoredKoi [2010-08-09 15:46:28 +0000 UTC]

Those were 18g 9/32" and 3/16", which ends up being a really nice size. The wee rings you're talking about using are super sleek and fluid, but (obviously) take about a million years to finish. >.> I'm still working on one in that size.

ArmoredKoi In reply to coldfirecustoms [2010-08-09 17:59:48 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm. I should look into 9/32" rings. I've never seen that size.. maybe I just haven't been looking. I get my rings from TheRingLord. Is that where you get yours?

I make my Japanese 12 in 2 with 1/8" and 3/32" rings. The triple (9 rows - about 3 1/2" - 4" wide) took me a very, very long time. u__u''
But it looks so cool once it's done, because the rings are so small and you can really tell a lot of time was put into it!

We get a large bulk of our rings from TRL, yep. We also love Blue Buddha. Both stores have the 9/32" rings. :] (TRL even has 9/32" black rings in enameled copper, but we've found they're just a wee bit too tight with AA 3/16" rings. It was worth a shot, though!)

Looks great! I've never been particularly successful with weaving dragonscale, I guess I need more practice.

Thank you! Dragonscale can be such a pain to start, but man! after you get it down, it's just so wonderful. Keep trying; it's entirely worth it.

Thanks also for the !

Thanks for the encouragement! I'll have to give it another go. I think my problem lies with my choice of ring sizes. I have no problem with it initially but after I get a few rows into it the weave gets so tight that I can't do any more.

do you make your own rings? [link] has a great tutorial that includes the ring sizes and gauges he uses...he's also on here as maillerphong

Hello--Operator In reply to Charlie-Ripley [2010-06-25 03:49:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know that site! I have visited many tutorials there.
I have made my own rings before but because of the time and effort that goes into it I actually find it cheaper to buy pre-made.
If I had better tools it would probably work in my favour to make all of my own but it's just a small hobby...I have been spending most of my time lately on needlecrafts.

eep! That sounds like such a pain! I've had that problem before with other weaves. >_<

That is such an incredible weave, it must have taken eons of patience to get the colors just right.

Thank you so much for the compliment! Dragonscale tends to be a weave that moves very slowly, but it is so, so rewarding in the end.

But of course. I shoudl really look into rings in better sizing for dragonscale! Its sooo pretty (and fluid too, thats a good point)!

coldfirecustoms In reply to h10134g [2010-05-28 18:22:37 +0000 UTC]

We use mainly 18g 9/32" and 18g 3/16" rings for our dragonscale...the ring sizes work out wonderfully. It's a pain to start sometimes, but a real treat (and accomplishment!) when it's done. ^_^
