Hope's defiant expression quickly went off her face as she feltt the collar tighten. She knew she had no alternative but do as she was told. She curtsied to Miss Gibson and uttered a very passive aggressive "yes ma'am" "Better but aren't you going to apologise for that outburst and your shameful attitude to somebody only trying to correct you and prepare you to be a law abiding citizen"

"Ma'am, sorry ma'am" replied Hope, trying at least to sound remorsesful..She didn't fancy any more of that punishment. Miss Gibson smiled at her and said "Improving. Slightly" checking Hope's apron and headscarf were tidy along with her unoform.

"Now ,move along. Hope was marched down a dark corridor past the cellblocks with her walking inside a yellow lined area and Miss Gibson having all the space to emphasize who was in charge. They finally arrived at the officer's staff room.

The women (and just a couple of men) were all drinking coffee , looking at r magazimes or talking . One of the officers looked at Hope and said "Inmate Maid Programme, huh,?We have pleny here to keep you busy, let's start off with good old style floor scrubbing. Did you think this was a soft option? Too bad, sweetie!"

Hope thought sadly of home where she never had to do this "undignified work" and had far more money than the officers but she was going to be here for a while. She thought she try looking busy to avoid painful punishment or extra time..
