I just threw this together for one of my characters on Reykjavik. Its one of the first proper manipulation's i've done on GIMP, and honestly i don't mind it at all. I would prefer it if i could get better fonts but i'm not sure how to get GIMP to access them. still.This character and artwork is (C) me only, and if for my use unless stated otherwise.

I think the font looks fine, but the credits are a bit hard to read, maybe just make them bold?
Do you use Windows or Mac... or something else? I'd love to be of help if you need to know how to work make Gimp access fonts.
Anyhoo, I just love the yellowy tone in this, it gives it a bit of a whimsical feel... The positioning of the horse looks great, very in proportion. I love the mane and tail, and the background is a nice touch, it brings your attention to the horse. Good job blending the hooves in with the flowers as well!
