It's the Golden Triumvirate of Bromance!

It's a great archetype relationship: Spock=logic/science/rationality, McCoy-passion and compassion/humanism/fallability, Kirk=the way we combine those disparate elements of humanity to take action and be a positive, heroic force.

But, of course, you're right -- there are so many unique elements to each character that they aren't simply archetypes but friends and brothers, with all the flaws and greatness in all people. That's what makes the triumvirate interesting, compelling, compulsively watchable.

Everyone on the Enterprise has ridiculously good chemistry with everyone else. You could take any two main characters and throw them together, and it's a good ship. It's insane. But yeah, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are far and away the best. I'll never tire of them. I'm glad it's translated into the new movie, too; I think that relationship is pretty much at the core of the very premise of TOS.

Agreed.

There are so many great small moments, little scenes (mainly with the big 3 but also with the supporting cast), that make for the reputation of TOS as an ensemble drama (when in fact it was star driven with Shatner and Nimoy).

And the new movie really understands this and why it really works so brilliantly (it is also just a damn fantastic movie). I can't wait to see this archetypal trio reinvented for the 21st century as they were only really introduced to one another and brought into basic conflict within the set-up of the movie.

Thanks.

A rather extreme retouch on a still frame from the episode Balance of Terror -- to turn it into a kind of comic book panel.

One of my Top Ten eps of ST or any other series. Tense, thoughtful, driven equally by its protagonist and antagonist.
