Description
Auguste J. Pavie, French explorer and diplomat who was pivotal in establishing French control over Laos at the expense of the weak Siam. After a long career in Cambodia and Cochinchina, he became the first vice-consul in Luang Prabang in 1886, living completely amongst the natives and risking his life (he explored the whole Indochinese Peninsula). Pavie was put in charge of building a telegraphic line between Phnom Penh and Bangkok.
