At first the coat looked a bit bulky, but opening the picture into a larger view I got a better feel for the design. Such detail! I can understand your terror with the design. It looks so simple but is yet a complex layering and design.

As an artist, I'm sure you've plenty experience with all these sort of questions and concerns about poses. Trust your instincts. Like you said, the pose caught your attention, so you'll be prepared to watch out for certain points in your next art pieces. ^_^
