Description
Crocheted Cotton-Eater Rainbow-colored blanket.This blanket took five months (approx. 100 hours) to create and used up 36 balls of Lily Sugar 'n Cream Cotton yarn.
It will be the last time I ever use cotton yarn for a blanket, but the end result is quite fabulous (both visually and tactually).
The pattern is called Catherine's Wheel Stitch.

I think I used G/H--or thereabouts. I usually use whatever size is required on the yarn.

Oh wow that's beautiful! Since you used cotton, I was wondering if it is as soft and warm as acrylic yarn?

The blanket is a bit cooler than acrylic and wool. It seems to breath better. I haven't gathered up the gumption to actually use it as a blanket, so I'm not sure how it would do keeping me warm. It does remind me a bit of the cheap cotton throws that most people have on their beds under the comforter and above their sheets and those always do a good job at keeping me warm.
It has an amazing weight to it that acrylic and wool don't carry. And due to the thick stitch, it's twice as thick and heavy as a typical cotton blanket. Using it is like being hugged. It's fabulous. If I hadn't gone through so much pain to create it, I would probably be less timid about using it.

Thanks. It wasn't too difficult. I actually found that it's damned near impossible for me to read written crochet instructions and much, much, much easier to read a crochet chart. If I hadn't discovered crochet charts, I'd probably still being doing chains and single crochet, too.

It's cotton, so it's thick, soft, heavy, and cool/warm. ^_^

Ooh, I love this pattern! It came out looking very nice, and the colours are lovely. It all ties together very nicely.

I saw that bernat has the same pattern up on their site (as of yesterday). They used some nice color combos as well, but showed the opposite site of the blanket. The wool they used was acrylic, so less stress on the hands, less expensive to make, and easier progress.

I loved the pattern a lot. I actually took a photo of the reverse side of the blanket. The correct side looks like little wheels.

My stitching looks similar to that. The reverse side it suppose to look quilted or puffy.

Aww, well, it's your decision on what side you think looks the best ^^ But I think it looks just as nice on the front as the back.

That's a fantastic colored "eater" blanket. And I don't like using cotton yarn either, makes my fingers raw working with it too long. I like using the Caron Simply Soft acrylic yarn, and it's not that expensive.
I wondered what a catherine wheel stitch would look like in a bigger pattern, it's rather pretty. I see that you did a back post stitch to get the ridges on the top. I think that gives it nice texture instead of working in the "trebles" stitches.

The reason I was drawn to the pattern was because it had those pretty ridges. I don't think I would have ever event attempted this pattern had it been worked the other way.
And, yeah, the cotton destroyed my hands. I would never ever recommend working with cotton during the cold months. They required a lot of moisturizer and if I worked the pattern for more than an hour at a time, I'd have to take several days off from crocheting so my hands could recover from the pain. Cotton weighs so much more than acrylic and is a lot more difficult to get to cooperate (splitting, stiffness, etc.)
I'm just happy it's done.
