Description This Nate Pride sketch is quite possibly the beginning of my collection. It's certainly the point where I really got into collecting art, and it remains to this day a favorite of mine. Which is really funny, since getting this thing was an incredibly difficult process.

Why, you ask? Because, being totally new to the art collecting scene, I didn't think to bring any reference with me. I assumed that because copies of the vintage pulps were legion in the dealers' area, the artists would automatically know who the Shadow was. Well, while Mr. Pride knew of the character, he didn't remember what he looked like. So I gave him a verbal description and he started from there, but had to keep checking with me to make sure he was on the right track. Fortunately, Guy Davis was there and had an artbook for sale packed with his own Shadow drawings, and he graciously loaned one to us to use for reference. It's a good thing he did, because he quite possibly saved this from being a disaster.

While the final art looks amazing, and I've been a regular customer of Mr. Pride's since, this did teach me to ALWAYS carry reference with me for every single character, no exceptions. Never, ever assume the artist knows who or what you're talking about or what they look like. Always be prepared. Oh, and never assume the artist has drawing paper on hand, either; while Mr. Pride comes fully stocked and ready to go, another artist at the same con had no paper at all when I approached him for a sketch. Always have at least one package of Bristol board with you.

By the way, this is probably my brother's favorite out of all my art pieces.
