Non humanoid alien concept I have been working on for over a year.

Evolved from small social pursuit predators, much like foxes or coyotes here on earth, the Pentarians ancestors slowly started evolving tool use as a method to construct traps with which they herded prey into. As the tools and traps became increasingly complex the particularly bright members started applying them in ways not directly related to food. Much like with us this lead to a feedback loop where tool complexity, intelligence, creativity, and social dynamics spiraled into the evolution of a sophontic life form.

Bipedal, the Pentarian is a warm blooded animal which is about the size of a large dog. It's back is covered in long coarse dark hair, while its underside is a lighter and softer fur, a counter shading inherited from their ancestors who were low on the food chain and thus routinely hunted. Four small black eyes sit in its disk like face atop it's long neck, though they are hard to see buried in the dark fur of its face. Above its face is a crest of hair which acts much like facial expressions for us. The manipulator tendrils, two large primary and three small secondary, surround it's small mouth which contains a hard sharp tongue that acts much like a beak. It's two powerful legs with its hooved feet allow it to run much faster than a human can.

This particular Pentarian is a crafsman/artisan. Around its neck is a tool belt containing a small hammer and crowbar like tool. On each of its legs is strapped a bag, connected by a leather belt across it's back, which is about as common for Pentarians as backpacks are for us. In one of its primary tendrils it holds a carving knife, and in one of its secondary tendrils is a small protein bar made from a mixture of ground up meat and high protein tubers.
