Laid down in 1934 under the initial guise as destroyer tenders, the Reliable class was expanded into a more general purpose support vessel. Strong elements of seaplane tender came into play in the form of a large hangar and twin catapults, while destroyer tender pushed through via its extended engine room in order to increase the designs' operating speed. As a oiler, the design is admittedly more limited, lacking large tanks to refuel ships, but her machine shop and crane system allows her to resupply and repair quite easily other vessels at sea, ranging from destroyers to submarines.

The Reliables, of which four are commissioned, tend to operate in support of large surface groups and typically have destroyer elements built around them. While their speed is not as impressive as surface warships which tends to restrict their presence in high speed situations, the Reliables are almost always found plodding along behind, ready to patch up and prepare other ships for further operation. Four were built beginning in 1935, with two derivative ships of the Cassandra class being additionally built at that time.
