Description A rather large painting I tried. 24" by 48" in oils.

Hellish to try and get any kind of detail into a digital format. Still grainy as shit. Oh well.

(And my eyes must be dead, I didn't see the reddish glare on the sides until now. I'll hopefully try to work that out later)

Incredibly haunting. Might sound a little odd, but I especially like the background.

As in the horizon behind the figures?

The colors behind the figures, yes.

I like that kind of moody background lighting. I try to go for grimly warm.

"Grimly warm."

I like that. It works really well.

Stretch this picture horizontally and it loses the focal point. It becomes distorted, but it shifts the focus from the upper middle skulls to all the skulls amassed over the fox. I can't attach image for a quick look then yay or nay for your liking, but take note of such effects.

My god this is so lovely. Reminds me of how dreams can feel sickening and grotesque despite mild objectivity, or a different kind of otherworldy nature. Something dead. Something unpleasant. Or unspoken of, pulling at the fox. He seems so comfortably tucked in his burrow.

Have you considered putting this up as a print?

Thanks.

And not really, though I may. But I'll probably get a better photo or something before I'd offer it if I did put it up.

This is really amazing, I think it's my favorite more surreal piece by you so far! I really love the colors and composition, and the skulls look great too. Was this based on dream imagery by any chance? Or is there a story behind the robed creatures?
And yeah, paintings and large drawings are especially hard to capture decently and convert into a digital format. So much detail always gets eaten

Thanks. As I said to Sabaku above, it's easily the painting I've worked on the longest so far, though it still has it's flaws regarding how it doesn't funnel attention to where I want it. I'm pretty happy with the composition particularly when I view the actual painting as yeah, some detail got eaten here, and I spent hours just to get these photos (it's actually two stitched together).

It's not quite directly dream imagery, though I've had some dreams in the past (I think I told you about some?) that share the mood I was aiming for. However I imagine this to be a sort of dream scene of the fox at the bottom, being 'haunted' or followed by whatever one chooses the robed creatures to represent, whether it's comforting or sad or terrifying etc, though I was mainly focused on trying to create a sad beauty to it.

I think the brightness and contrast of the skulls and the lighter ochre background kind of draw the attention more to the top of the painting instead of to the fox. Considering this is two photos it actually looks pretty good!

Yeah, you've told me about the coyote one and linked me to another one in your gallery. You got the mood down really well; to me they didn't really come across as terryfing but just sort of "there". Whether or not they're scary depends on who's looking at it and how they feel about such imagery.

Yeah, the focus ended up being the point between the two tallest skulls.

Ah, I still had a couple interesting dream stories I was meaning to dig up.

Damn, this is fantastic! Probably one of your best paintings yet! I can see that you put a lot of time and effort into this one, and I'd say the results were worth it. How do you feel about it, and what was the idea going into this?

(Also, yes, trying to get paintings into any kind of digital format is absolute hell... Photos always glare and scanners eat your colours. Blah. Looks fine though!).

Thanks. I do believe it's the one I've spent the most time on so far, definitely. I am fairly happy with the result overall. I can't recall exactly where it was I got the particular idea, but I have been more inspired to play with more dreamlike and surreal stuff lately, since I feel like  my skill level is finally at the point I can make it work.

As for how I feel about the painting itself, there are a decent number of flaws. The main thing is that the attention of the viewer isn't drawn to the isolated fox but the skulls at the top, whereas I would've preferred if I had managed to make it draw the eye down and make the fox seem small and forlorn and dwarfed by the robed figures. The perspective I chose didn't bring that out well enough. I also determined that I need to work more on blending more subtle colours. The sky is ok, but the robed ones are a bit too black whereas I would've preferred to have a more nuanced colour scheme that gave a bit more 'misty' an atmosphere.

And well, after this I'm somewhat more inspired again to start from the bottom and begin working on building more drawing skill. As in, I've hit a point where I now want to work on honing the basics again, since I feel more generally artistic than I have in years and want to cement that.
