Description 9x12 on bristol. Something totally new for me in technique.
I used graphite and copic gray markers to create the illusion on subdued color. For those of you who have never worked with copics, they are awesome! However, they are alchohol based and each graphite. I think I have solved the predatory nature of the copics in this piece. What do you think?
iThis is the first of three zombie spider pieces in the works.

The unique color choices are what draw me in. Spider webbings are great, your wonderful technique could make 'trapped in a paperbag' look good.

I love your use of cool greys to fill the negative space. And it makes your warm greys/(french greys?) Pop to the foreground. Really, it was a smart, minimalistic choice. I almost wish you had continued it onto the left side, but I'm just a sucker for symmetry. It was such a great, easy, solution.

Yet, I wish your spiders were more, zombish, to set this piece apart from your many other spidery works.

I -know- you're a very black, white, grey scale artist, but like a pop of solid yellow, or lime green, could really give it a monstrous vibe, without overshadowing the brilliant skill you have.

With zombies, alarmingly obvious disembowelment is so classic; but, with spiders, do they have such iconic insides like stomachs and intestines? Perhaps strings of color, even just one solid color like olive, could be a good 'substitute' to displaced organs. I dunno, just brain storming.

Regardless, the spiders are good fantastic, but I don't quite feel the zombie thing. They're monsters, perhaps sticky or damp, but undead? I cant quite see it. But, in the end, who gives a shit. You're too talented, really, it's nitpicking.

...Also, the woman's face is great. She's scared, she's confused, she's hot. Really, semantics aside, it's a great piece, sexy and captivating. Bravo!

I disagree. Look at the details. I see the spiders appearing more brittle with cracked abdomens and splotches of decay on their bodies. Their heads look skull-like and their lower mandibles look like they have broken off (David likes to draw a full mouth of jagged teeth vs fangs for his spiders). They generally appear more gruesome with their elongated teeth and horns. I'd say he nailed it, I like them just the way they are! Well done!!!

Interesting points. A touch of color might add that extra little thing to make it sing. I will test your theory out and let you know what the end results are. Thanks for the critique. More zombies to follow, at least until I get it right.

I would certainly like to see that. Certainly since I know you'll only supersede anyone's expectations. How long do your pieces take, on average?

My pieces generally take between three and five hours to complete. Aliens took three hours.

"I want to eat your brains," said the zombie spider to the beautiful fly. Nice work here David. I'm loving the extra spiny zombified spiders and the maiden's look of utter despair. Excellent!
