If you're here and reading this, you probably don't need me to tell you the purpose of this journal - but, well, I will anyway. It's contest time! I've been wanting to hold a writing competition for deviantART's literature community for some time, but something always gets in the way. No longer! There's something about mythology and legend that has always been fascinating to me, and the same goes for any literature that is inspired by these tales.

I'm sure you can see where this is going!

I want you to take a legend or a piece of mythology and transform it. Retell it from a different perspective, chronicle it through haiku or senryu, twist it, modernise it... It is completely up to you! You can stick as close to or stray as far from it as you like. There are so many myths and so many options - have fun!

Some stuff you need to know:

You can use mythology from any real culture.

The maximum is 40 lines for poetry and 1000 words for prose. There is no minimum.

At this stage, there are no separate categories for poetry and prose. Nevertheless, you are welcome to submit either. I realise that this will make judging quite a challenge; however, this is to ensure that there are substantial prizes for the winner and the two runners up.

All entries must be new and submitted to me via note by the tentatively set date of November 5th, 2013.

I would appreciate either an explanation of the original myth / legend or a link to a wiki article in the artist's comments, particularly if you are working from a more obscure or lesser-known piece of mythology. A link back to this contest would also be great.
