That'd be kinda sweet...if the eighth Doctor met up with his love, just before the end...

That would be very fitting, wouldn't it? It'd bookend 8th's life right before the war.

Indeed, particularly for the eighth who, I think is the most Romantic of Doctors - and not in the lovey-dovey sense, but the tragic Byronic sense. It's more fitting for him to go back to that first kiss

Y'know, you just gave me a fanfic idea!

Excellent Though, I've had this idea (which you're welcome to nick if you want), that the eighth Doctor does regenerate in the Time War, possibly into the Hurt version who ends the war, or whatever, but I like to think that when the eighth fell, it was though a temporal fissure, and he fell to Earth where he was found by Grace, and he died in her arms.

Again, depending on what we learn about Hurt, either into Hurt who goes back into war with new determination, or into Eccleston who flees in fear at what he's done.

Given my stance on where Hurt fits, its severely unlikely I'll include him unless I were to do an Unbound story.

I wonder if the whole Hurt placement shock is how people felt during The War Games

You mean how they felt about Lungbarrow or the "Morbius Doctors"

DoctorRy In reply to conjob1989 [2013-08-21 06:58:02 +0000 UTC]

Similarly, maybe, though Lungbarrow was only really read by a few fans, and Morbius was contradicted pretty quickly soon after broadcast. In The War Games we were thrown information about the Doctor that not only went against the spirit of what had gone before, but flatly contradicted what we'd been told (the first Doctor claimed to be an exile and had no interest in getting involved with others' affairs, and yet the second claims he deliberately went on the run from the Time Lords because they *didn't* interfere). Lungbarrow contradicts the spirit of earlier information, while Morbius is more War Games like, in that in The Three Doctors the Hartnell Doctor is described as "the earliest Doctor".

So, the Hurt Doctor defeats the spirit of earlier stories - it was clearly Davies intention that Eccleston came after McGann, but as it was never explicitly stated on screen the Hurt Doctor doesn't explicitly contradict what went beforehand (IF the Hurt Doctor is between McGann and Eccleston, something we still don't completely know). Which means, it's not quite as bad as The War Games or Morbius

Then there's Faction Paradox and 3rd's regeneration

Third's regeneration was pretty quickly retconned, though, so I think most people don't bothter too much about it. Faction Paradox has probably been long forgotten by most as well, aside from Miles' hardcore followers Which is a shame cause that was a neat idea...though Miles tends to be flogging the horse slightly.

Not to Moffat apparently seeing as some of the things we've seen were lifted from his EDAs

Hmmm...I've heard that theory but I'm not sure it's as true as people say. A lot of the ideas it's claimed Moffat has stolen are ideas that two people could reasonably come to independently (like a giant space libarary), or in actual fact predate the EDA's (like a human TARDIS).

It does seem rather obvious upon re-watch.

Hmmm, don't really buy into it. Anymore than I buy into the idea that Lawrence Miles ripped off all his good ideas from Alan Moore. Again, apparently it's obvious if you go back and read Miles' books, but seriously...sci-fi has ideas, and people come up with the same ones all the time. Are people seriously suggesting that writers like Miles, Moffat and Gaiman aren't talented enough to come up with their own ideas? And if Miles and Gaiman both nicked the idea of a sentient TARDIS from the comics, does it really make that much difference? Both came up with stories that were completely dissimilar, both stories were pretty fascinating, and it's not like Doctor Who hasn't spent an entire history of stealing from other sources anyway. Miles may be a complete nut job, and I know it's fashionable to always deride the current showrunner, but credit where credit's due...they are both great writers.

Speaking of Miles, I wonder what he thinks of the recent news?

I thought he had actually written something about it on his blog, but he took it down almost as quickly as he put it up (as he is prone to do...). I didn't catch it, if it did happen...
