Description The USS The Sullivans is named after, and memorializes the five Sullivan brothers, George, Francis, Joseph, Madison and Albert.

All 5 would join the navy at the beginning of the war and despite attempts to give them different postings the brothers insisted they serve together and they were assigned to the light cruiser USS Juneau.

In the 13th of November, 1942 the Juneau would be hit by two torpedoes from the Japanese sub I-26. The ship exploded and the other American ships assumed that there were no survivors and left the area to avoid other losses however, around 100 sailors had survived the sinking including at least 2 of the brothers but by the time they were discovered and saved 8 days later only 10 men survived.

The story of all 5 brothers being lot at once rocked the news back in the US and the Navy would enforce existing rules to prevent it from happening again. The brother's parents Tom and Alleta Sullivan would spend the rest of the war raising funds for the war in their son's memories and Alleta would break the bottle when commissioning the USS Sullivans in 1943.

The youngest brother Albert had a wife and son and the family name would live on there and in the modern day the Sullivan family still supports and visits the ship named after their relatives. The US Navy has named 2 ships after the brothers.
