The Bay was first visited by Europeans in the 1600s but having a history long before that, the French gave it the name Bay of Thunder and the Ojibwa peoples called the bay "Animikie" meaning ThunderToday the bay is host to the City of Thunder Bay which was formed in 1970 after the two smaller cities of Port Arthur and Fort William united after over a century of rivalry
