I love love love Garrett-Strangelove's AU where Smither's and Burn's social status is swapped. Not because burnsmithers. I don't ship it personally. But I like to think what is different in their lives and personalities in this AU. So these are my own headconnans about his concept.
-Burn's ends up growing up with his father instead of with his grandfather. He's well educated, but because of the economic status of his family in the long run, he can't exploit those interests and talents. He tries his best to earn enough money for his family to stay stable. With his father, the financial stress causes him to be very hard and borderline abusive to Burns. This results in Burns growing up rather timid and a perfectionist. He also experienced the great depression and it's a miracle that he survived.
-Smithers was raised by his father who started the nuclear power plant of Springfield and would later hire Mr.Burns as an act of kindness to his situation. Smithers grows up privaliged and spoiled and was basically gifted the job of running the plant without much effort, aside from a college degree. Smithers acts on emotions rather than logic with his work and often fights with clients who won't give him what he wants. He's ultimately a huge brat who gets what he wants. More often than not , Burns, as his secretary, is actually the one giving Smithers good ideas and saving his butt from his reckless actions by shredding angry letters and claiming the company didn't reply to them. Smithers us very kind to Burns but sees him as physically incompetent, sense Burns seems to be very accident prone with his elderliness, however Smithers Sr. won't let his son fire him. Smithers also enjoys seeing Burns fascinated by new discoveries such as the TV or Jell-O. Burns looks up to Smithers (even tho he's kind of an idiot) and confines in him as a friend at most. Burns stresses over being a perfect employee and is bewildered at Smithers's patience. Burns is very hesitant to open up to Smithers about his life, but slowly does and becomes close with him.
