Description For 's contest.

The current theme is "traveling around the world" and I got the USA.

After MANY, MANY failed ideas attempted I went for a sort of abstract idea of guns in America.

This was not my original idea, it was my last attempt at producing something. The idea I wanted to do so badly was to make wings that looked like an eagles and put them on a model. There, happy now? Jesus. I wanted that idea so badly but couldn't find large brown feathers anywhere. Calm yourselves down. Go ahead and bash Canada all you want, you won't see me attacking you, because WHATEVER, THAT'S YOUR OPINION.

I know this looks ridiculous... but if you knew all the stress I went through to even get THIS! lol, you'd appreciate it. Also, Mark needed to wear the glasses or his face would have been in the snow and blood.

My views and opinions are silenced. Insane patriotism wins in the end. Everyone, just leave me alone. I'll keep my mouth shut, just like I try do so away from the computer, to keep everyone else happy.

Wow! Fuck, Megan. I didn`t know that this would make so much controversy. I think you did an amazing job with the concept in the little time you had. All of these douchebags who can`t understand your position are just making the point we are making about their country ever so valid.

Haha, yeah... that's exactly it. They're... so proud it's scary.
I tried to tell Brian what happened and... he took their side!
He said I was incredibly stupid/ignorant for using such a
"politically incorrect" symbol. I even told him how I had
no more creative ideas left. But he just said I should have
taken a picture of a fat guy at McDonald's and be done.
Though that's pretty bad as well... not to mention the lack
of artistic taste to a photo like that.

they just dont understand that their country looks like that, inside and out. Don't they think we get upset when they say Canada is a bunch of beer drinking, igloo dwelling, shutouts? But we don't go around trolling on their possibly offensive artworks and discourage them. HUMPH!! Freaking politically incorrect-ness!

This is a great idea and a wonderful photograph.
And I am very sorry that you got so much critisism about this. I am from America and I think this is unfortunantely a good representation of too many things that go on over here. There IS too much violence and many, many people here try to block that from their minds because they want to believe that they are in the perfect country. I could say sooo much more about how imperfect America is, but that could be never-ending.
Anyways, you are very talented and don't let us silly Americans piss you off. It's too much effort.

Thank-you so very much! I really appreciate this comment. There is no
way I was saying your country is all bad, it's just that they decided to
only take this as an attack against America and me making it look bad...
well, it's too late it's already been done. And even if you disagree with
that, be confident knowing that to you, your country is perfectly fine.
That's my view at least. There is good and bad in every country and yes,
some people will tend to point that out. Though for me, one of the only
things I can say about my own country is the cold weather. XD Unless
someone points it out I may not see anything else.

You are very welcome! I think I understand completely what you were conveying & I respect that because I agree with you. Hm. Yes, good & bad. For some reason I tend to dwell on the bad things that happen here, but I always see the good things about certain other countries like Canada. Even though many people bash Canada, I think that it would be a nice country to live in - aside from the weather. But then again, America is my home and I guess there's no way that I could not love it.

From the artistic point of view, it's a greate shot. I mean, the whole setting, the scene and the expresion - very emotional and strong.
The theme is kinda "politically incorrect"... but who cares? That's how art works Don't mind those "patriotists", (imho) they just can' handle criticism.

Keep up !

So I live in america and I do own a gun. It's just for target shooting and stuff, no violence at all just fyi. I just wanted to add my two cents worth, hopefully it's not rude or attacking-ish since I certainly don't mean to be but here goes.

I don't find your photo or description thingy offense or inaccurate. There is violence in america just like anywhere else and certainly a lot of that is from guns since just about everybody can have a gun, not to say that everything is all guns and violence or anything. so yeah I certainly don't think that it should define america and as I've read in your comments I don't think you meant it that way either.

As a suggestion or observation I don't know? It's probably not helpful but...If it were my photo I might have had it represent the recent suicides that have received a lot of media attention because the ones I've heard about have been in the US. Not to say that other countries don't have suicides, just that there have been a lot of suicides here. and since you went for abstract I thought that suicide would work also and have the benefit of suicide awareness since I really doubt the gun laws are going to change but maybe one day suicide won't be such a regular occurrence.

As to the photo I think it's really great, not that I'm an expert or anything. I didn't even notice that there wasn't blood on the other side of Marks head until I read the comments. and for me it's fine because I just thought that it was a front to back wound and not a side to side wound if that makes any sense. Although I don't get the title and that's fine too because I don't need to

So that's a really long comment and I debated about actually adding it because I do feel that it doesn't really have a point but oh well. I did anyways. Keep up the good work Megan. Ignore the crap talkers because I'm sure you have more fans then haters <3

ContagiousPixie In reply to LeighLou [2011-01-29 01:25:52 +0000 UTC]

That was the point of this, I just never said so. Because he is gay,
and with the gun laying there it appears to be suicide. But I say
guns because it's much more vague and wider of a category.
Especially to be a theme for a country. If it were a competition
for issues, yes suicide would fit much better but I don't know if
you want suicide to be the representation of the US, in this case
at least.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LeighLou In reply to ContagiousPixie [2011-01-29 01:51:08 +0000 UTC]

What you're saying does make sense but since it seems people aren't liking guns to be a representation of the US and since we're talking abstract ideas such as guns IN America or suicide IN America to me it just seems like if suicide is what you were going for but just not saying so why not just say it? I mean either way i'm sure you would have people getting all cranky about it because it's a negative and not some great American thing so yeah. Either way..it's your photo and it's great with whatever explanation you want.

oh and personally I like the new title more it just seems to fit better especially since if you take the photo just as a photo and not a photo for a contest the title and photo mesh. so like if someone just sees the picture and tittle it's not like what? americans? whatcha going on about? lol

ContagiousPixie In reply to LeighLou [2011-01-29 02:13:56 +0000 UTC]

I had originally intended to do something positive. As I had stated
in my comments, this was my last idea after many failed attempts
of much more positive ideas. And then to get bashed after all the
stressing and changing of ideas... my god... I want to shoot puppies.

The idea I was so set on, I searched all over town for what I needed...
but couldn't find what I needed was for the eagle. I was going to
make bird wings and get a model to wear them and then it would be
my style and represent America.

I only changed the name because I am sick and tired of people getting
upset with me. I hate giving in, I hate it so much, but what I hate even
more is waking up in the morning and seeing these comments and
getting this sick feeling of anger in my gut.

oh I know. I'm a comment stalker. I read everything lol. I'm really sorry. I didn't mean for what I said to be bad or anything. Just I don't know. It's all really messed up.

Yeah large feathers are probably hard to come by.
I like photography and I try to do it but nothing ever comes out. So I know it must be hard/stressing to get something to work out at the best of times when you have what you need and so not having it and having to come up with something totally different must be frustrating and then to have people say things just because they don't like it is just plain crazy.

Oh...well...It sucks that you did it because of the pressure of others. I hope I didn't contribute. I was just thinking that if someone took just the picture and the title without the context of the theme that it wouldn't make sense.

I'm sorry that you're going through this. It's just crazy what people get upset over. I feel so bad for you I'm really sorry...

It's alright, thank-you. I was just still very heated when you
made your comment so I couldn't tell what your intentions
were. I wouldn't care so much if they didn't like the image...
it's that they're mad about what I said that's getting to me.
They think I'm angry because they "criticized my art" and
therefore they think I'm a whiny little baby because I can't
take that. When it's not about the image at all! We've both
been upset about what I said in the first place in some form.

They'll get over it, you have the right to say whatever you want just like they do. Yes it sucks that they feel the need to say crappy things but that's how some people are. So yerp.
Oh I've not been upset. Unless you count when I thought I had upset you? Because I usually don't say anything to anybody on here and so when I did and I thought I had upset you on top of all of them I got a little upset but it's not a big deal. I didn't care what you said about the photo or anything like that, it's all fine with me.

I don't see what's so controversial about pointing out this issue. Of course there is violence everywhere, not just in America, but really all over the world. BUT they created that image for themselves and I'm not talking just about the movies.
America was considered a country of new opportunities by many European people during the WWII; it was presented to them as a faraway country where you can live freely without any hints of war coming, compared to the Europe at that time, it looked almost utopian. After the WWII, many people got shocked by the fact that the violence in America has been increasing because it ruined their fantasy about "the free country".
Also, I stumbled upon these links; the first one is list of countries by gun ownership (spoiler: USA is no 1) and the second one is an interesting essay that I found about violence in America and it's basically what I was trying to say. [link] [link]

About the photo: I really like the composition and the colours. A bit of blood around the entry wound would be a nice touch (if the entry wound supposed to be around his temple), but it looks fine even without it.

ContagiousPixie In reply to ScarletteDeath [2011-01-28 19:40:50 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. I believe people are getting too worked up over it because
they're a little too "patriotic". And of course assuming that I'm
assuming thing, which in the words of my mother, "to assume makes
an ass out of you and me". And yes, it's things like those links that
got me to choose it. Not even that, but I Googled "Things that
represent the USA" and many times guns came up!

Yeah, unfortunately I didn't think about that... and even if I did Mark

The US may have more guns per capita, but just as many people die from any other violence in other countries, EVEN WITHOUT GUNS. To assume that a random movie or news article is the full depiction of an entire country is kind of like me assuming you don't have a brain, just because you assumed that. Lol

I like the piece though, not many people would go with such a bold (if ill informed) idea. Keep being bold, it's good and it's what art needs more these days.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ContagiousPixie In reply to sonic-jinx [2011-01-28 07:18:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank-you for equally assuming. I used the film as inspiration, I didn't
use it as an exact fact. Thanks for making me feel absolutely splendid
in saying I have no brain. Sorry if I didn't use exact and precise words
that appealed to you. Yes, I used the word violence, but I did not mean
it as in the US is the sole place for heavy violence. And it's not just that,
I have been able to observe for years and hear from friends about it.
What I really want to know is, what does my opinion even matter to you?
If this is a partial way of how I view the US, what does it matter? I'm
just some random person that means nothing to you.

Thanks I guess. Hard to tell whether you're more upset with what I said or liking what I made. :\

sonic-jinx In reply to ContagiousPixie [2011-01-28 16:43:53 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I did not intend to make you out to be brainless ( i was using that statement as a metaphor and is not the way I view you ) And if it looked like that I apologize.

Truly that was my point, you observe from friends and news and so on, try visiting the place. I myself have not encountered much violence beyond a couple random fist fights, and that's over my entire life.

To be honest, I don't really care about your opinion at all. I just don't like to see people trod on a place giving it a bad reputation without actually having been to the place, or knowing what it's really like.

LOL I'm not upset, haha, I'm pretty much just trolling on the random deviation button. It's what I do when I get bored of looking at the Popular list full of random nudes, memes and anime dudes looking like they grew up in the twilight dimension.

Anyway, sorry to have upset you, you probably got a ton of douches like me going 'AWMYGAWD SHE SAID AMERICAS VIOLENT!' *doom button*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ContagiousPixie In reply to sonic-jinx [2011-01-28 20:10:06 +0000 UTC]

But you chose to only see the word "violence"! The whole point of the image
was guns more than anything. I just threw in the word violence without too
much meaning, not realizing people would get so... asbkgudsygfjahwtg!

This was my last option anyways. Jesus was it ever a bad fucking idea.
Originally I was going to use baseball, but I didn't know how, then a
friend of mine who moved here from the US told me to do a guy wearing
a wifebeater and holding a baseball bat in one hand and apple pie in the
other while chewing bubblegum, but I didn't know how to make it artistic.
Then I thought about having someone in the middle of a place where clear
cutting took place (which I know happens everywhere!) to show the
dwindling of nature with the states, but I knew that was too hard. Then
I was going to make bird wings using large brown feathers to represent
the eagle, but I couldn't find large brown feathers anywhere. So as a last
option I went for guns. After all that stress trying to get a picture made in
just 3 weeks and finally getting something done I get penalized!

Hopefully you can understand my frustration.

Har, maybe you should proof read your own comments and think about what they might mean to the people you're commenting on.

HA kidding.
But to put it simply, it's not like america needs more bad press, we get plenty of it in the news and movies, posting something to wit showing only the negative side of life here, miIiiiight make some people angry.
