Description For Jason

Okay, so I finally got a deviantart account. Now you can't bug me about it anymore, ~DanikaMorningStar and ~martiowlsten ! So I figure as long as I'm here, I may as well put up some of my older crap first.

Yay first upload.

This is Link from Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 64. He's sad because he's the only kid without a fairy in the whole Kokiri Village. Mido's probably been poking fun at him too. The kid's got issues. Saria's there to try and comfort him.

Some kind soul up in Washington was nice enough to stick this pic in the fanart section of Nintendo Power #175. That was a January issue I think....

Spectracolor/Prismacolor pencils.

Oh my goodness, I am so touched by this right now---I am so touched you came here to say all this....! I have been so happy with the effect this picture has had over the years. It always brings me joy to hear from people who saw it in the magazine all those years ago, and to learn that I could move someone.

It was funny; I sent a copy of the picture to NoA, but it was more of just a visual love-letter than anything else. I never really expected it to show up in NintendoPower. Then one day my Mom, who interacts with a lot of young college students, said that one of them had come up to her and shown her the issue; I think they recognized at least the last name. And sure enough, it was the picture she'd seen me draw months previously. When she told me about it I was so excited I bought two copies! And, haha, I remember, the girl at the GameStop or wherever that rang me up bought one for herself right then and there and asked me to sign it!

I am so happy this picture has touched so many people.

I love the relationship between Link and Saria. Maybe I just have a soft spot for characters who impart comfort where others wish to wound. And you know, maybe it's not all just about Link not having a fairy---he is so different in so many ways from the other children in the Kokiri Village, and he knows it. There's an isolation there. Maybe I was drawing from that early, early cinematic in the game, where he's just shivering there alone on his bed. It's been so many years since I drew it, it feels impossible to recall the exact inspiration. But just as there must have been plenty of times like that dark cinematic of him alone in his house, I think I wanted to imagine that there could have been just as many times that his kindest friend came to lift him up.

Thank you so much again for taking the time to say just what this picture meant to you. I feel honored and humbled that it could be so powerful for you.

Thank you.

Admittedly I first saw this in that Nintendo Power issue, but I misinterpreted the message/meaning.

Oh hey, someone who saw it when it was new!

Heh, now I'm curious what your take on it was.... I love hearing different angles on things.

My original thought was that Link was reflecting on how he had already lost his dearest friend (Saria) twice already, first when he originally left the forest, and again when she became the Forest Sage.

Wow. This picture says a lot about the Great Deku Tree's monologue at the beginning of the game. Since Saria has always been there for him, I absolutely admire this picture very much. Since Saria is Link's best friend, it just goes to show you how much a friend can change your life. Especially when it's someone like Saria.

Thanks so kindly! I love Link's backstory in Ocarina of Time, and I really wanted to explore the vulnerability and isolation he must have felt as the only one who was so different. But of course, his best (and likely only!) friend Saria had to be there too, always friendly and caring in the background. Love their friendship.

Thanks for looking!

I still love this picture so much. Just how you set it up, with Link in the corner, it kind of seems like he's trying to be kinda tough about it but it obviously hurts him. And Saria tilted on a slight angle as she's coming in, and the coloring... I just adore everything. Even after going through the Nintendo Power magazine, I went back to it a few more times. It really stood out to me, and I never forgot it.

He seems so much a real person in your drawings, it's amazing to think you can play him in a video game!Β  Makes me think of The Neverending Story.Β  I wish I were good enough at video games to play Zelda (I'm pretty bad!)

The way you can play Link in the video games, just as Bastien follows Atreyu in the movie.Β  Entering another world from ours.Β  (I know, I probably spelled the names wrong.Β  And I'm an author too!)

It helps that the games keep him mute, too.... so the player can imprint himself into the avatar in whatever way he likes.Β

Stick some garlic in my mouth and call me Wario! I have the issue this was in! I think it focused on Double Dash at the time or so.

It's sad to see Nintendo Power go, but it's good to know the fan artists who submitted to them are also here on dA.
