Did you use a very dark pencil or charcoal or something on the darker bits?

For the very darks I use a Prang 5B pencil, I havent found anything better yet. Though it does get shiny. Spraying minimizes that though.

I use a matte based fixative. Stops all sorts of nasty things happening to the drawing.
Permanently protective Matte finish
Eliminates glossy sheen
Non-yellowing
Moisture resistent
Dries in minutes.
(I read that off the can)
It is made by Krylon, but there are other makes available. Stops smudges too. Thankfully!!
