Description I didn't take the pic, I told my Dad to...if I'd done it, I would've taken it differently...

So, yeah…

BEHOLD THINE DARK JAK PUMPKIN CARVING! O_O

Here's the sketch I used to make it [link]

And I'm perdy damn proud of the end result! The only thing that I'm unsettled about is his mouth. I wasn't so sure it was gonna work in the beginning, what with all the little carved areas and all so close together, but I guess time, patients, and a well thought through design along with good carving knives helped me make it possible!
Though I did just realize that there's a part I forgot to carve in, and it's even marked. ….But it's not like I'm gonna point it out.

I worked on it in 2 sittings; the first the night before Halloween, the second after I got home from school on Halloween. It's kind-a weird; I had trouble with carving the left side, which I did in the second sitting. I don't know if it had to do with me not having a good art day on Halloween, or just that it was more difficult because it was the left side plus the knives being slightly bent…but whateveh. Just thought it was odd. I was gonna add some Precursor writing off to the sides of it, but I couldn't find my translation sheet and I didn't have time to look for it.

Now, what I'm disappointed with as far as the picture goes, is that my Dad took it at a slight angle, so it looks a little….different then if you were to look at it straight on and centered. It kind-a looses it's scary and intimidating feeling almost, since he appears to be looking off at something to the right (his left), instead of right at you. 0__0
But oh well, I have another pic of this in my scraps [link] , and in that one he's staring straight at all of us.

I edited the background out in photoshop, to draw more attention to the pumpkin - yes, but to mostly get rid of all my Mom's flowers that were behind it. x3

Tools:
Special Pumpkin carving knives (don't remember the brand name or what they were called), and my concept ref sketch
...oh, and a candle.

Now that is frikking awesome! I love all the creative pumpkin cravings seen around Halloween but I never though of a Jak pumpkin! I'll have to try that next year. You mind if I try it with your sketch?

How did you remove the background with photoshop? I know there's a tool for that but it didn't turn out as nicely when I used it for one of my photos. [link]

I used the...a...magnetic tool, there's more to describing it, but I can't quite remember it all.
It just went around the whoel pumpkin - for the most part - so when I painted, it protected what was surrounded by it. I went back and fixed up soem of the rough edges with a soft paint tool after wards.
...That was crappily described, just reminde me and I'll explain it more clearly and know what I'm explaining later. x3

Eh, I coulda done better me'self Just kidding, I kid! Really...

This is great -- lotta details went into this, which is hard to do on a pumpkin You even went to the trouble to MAKE your own design pattern and plan it out precariously so (my sis and I usually do professional-leveled carvings from original oficial artwork... well, she does, at least; I try to follow the same path as you, only the simple ones for my friends to do easily).

COOKEcakes In reply to MiraKHall [2005-11-20 00:06:34 +0000 UTC]

AH! Well when it all comes down to it, I think that you could do just as well if not better.
It's the knives that made it possible. Though you probably already read that in the discription. x3
Yeah, I've been hearing and seeing around from peeps, such as Yoshie and Jackalopette, about the crazy cat pumpkin carving stentzle (sp) that you did and gav to them to use. Itwas pretty spiffy lookin' design, nice and simple, but awsome and uniqe (sp). - I have problems with spelling, just incase you havn't noticed yet
Thank you oh so uberly much for the nice comment! I wish I'd taken a picture of it after it'd been rotting for a while, he completely lost his hair and nose first. xD
And sorry I took so stupidly long to reply - I'll give no excuses. >_>;

This is great! ^^ I looked at the design, too... very awesome!

my pumpkin had a half carved, half scraped (so it wouldn't cave in) downward spiral going all the way from the top to the bottom... my hand hurt all day the next day from it and then my mom threw them away because it's not halloween any more...

The moral of this story is, pumpkin carving is fun, but it's hard to put a lot of work into something that's not going to stay with you forever. ^^ At least you got pictures! (and it's nice Tell your dad good job)

Well, yeah, I didn't do the tounge, but that's not the part I forgot to carv. I just, didn't do the tounge for fear of it falling apert due to lack of support. I'll give you a hint; the part I forgot to do is up around his eyes *specificllyhisrighteyecough*
Thanks again.

COOKEcakes In reply to Dogluvr [2005-11-03 02:34:23 +0000 UTC]

*ka-snort* x3

Well, yeah, it was difficult, but mostly because it can just be plain hard to carve a pumpkin due to a lack of arm and hand strength. Though figuring out the sketch to work off of was the hardest part; I imagined that the white space was the pumpkin and the gray spaces were the cut outs, and I had to make sure that there were enough connecting places to keep the whole carving held up and together.

Beshwah - well my condolences I give thee.

Or maybe you can do a carving for thanks giving, or possibly even christmas!
