Now seems like a PERFECT opportunity to talk about all my Pony biology headcanons!!!

Earth Ponies:

Earth Ponies are generally the largest pony race. They're also the closest to real-life horses in appearance and physique. This also includes their natural coat patterns, which often don't stray far from realistic ones.

I wish there was more to say for Earth Ponies, but a quick google search on horses and their features practically does the work for me.

Pinkie and AJ are both on the extreme end in size, being work horse breeds, so they aren't the best representation of race standards. However it is pretty common to find Earth Ponies with more labor-intense professions, and more muscular physiques.

Pegasi:

Pegasi are close in height to the average Earth Pony, often smaller, and you'd be hard-pressed to find any near as tall as the largest Earth Ponies. Their smaller stature is heavily related to their flying ability. The larger, and heavier, a Pegasus is the quicker they might tire in the air.

Their bones are hollow just like birds. Their necks and legs thin and long. Their hooves are flat and splayed for cloudwalking, with bird-like scales up their lower legs, and extra hindclaws for landing stability. Pegasi wings also have a small opposable hoof-like digit at the last joint, like the thumb on a bat wing.

Much of pegasi's fur is actually feathers as well, and many can sport impressive plumage on their chests and legs. This also makes foals a sight to behold as their baby feathers come in. Some pegasi have both tail feathers and hair, and others no hair at all.

Pegasi coat patterns are more bird-like too, with many sporting lighter underbellies and a darker coat along their backs and wingtops. Their wings come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors too.

RainbowDash is on the smaller side for her race. What she lacks in size she makes up for in agility, with short angled wings and tailfeathers built for high speeds. She has a classic light blue, near-white hue on her underbelly and wings with a deep navy adorning her back.

Fluttershy is the total opposite. Her long lanky legs put her on the larger side of things, with huge wings that dwarf her tiny frame. They're owl-like in appearance, and perfect for silent flying and gliding, however their large size makes it exhausting to fly for long periods, which is fine by her since she enjoys the forest floor better than Cloudsdale anyway.

Unicorns:

Unicorns are the smallest breed of pony, with more deer-like features including ears, noses, and even larger canine teeth. Their hooves come to a cloven point, and their tails are longer and lion-like. In stature they can be quite similar to Shetland ponies, with shorter, thicker legs and larger heads and eyes.

The reason unicorns are so tiny compared to the other races is simply due to evolution, and a bit of a trade off to being able to harness magic so readily. Compared to Earth Ponies for example, if magic is taking the brunt of most any labor you need to perform, there's not as much need for physical strength and size to survive. On the flip side, The sharpness of unicorn horns as well as their larger, sharper canines was likely evolved as a defense mechanism by their ancestors.

Their manes grow down to their shoulders, and some all the way down their back. Many at least have a tuft of hair at the base of their tails. Their tails vary greatly in length, but don't grow long hair for a ways down the length. Unicorns are also more prone to growing beards, regardless of gender.

Many unicorn horns are covered in a thick velvet, while for a rare few the raw core is exposed. Just like the unicorns in the new Gen 5, all horn cores have patterns on them unique to each individual, much like a fingerprint. These patterns are always visible on bare horns, but those with velvet are only seen when using magic.

Unicorn coats can be the most fantastical of all the races, often with wild patterns and gradients you'd never see in real life. The same pattern on their horns can often be present on their coats too!

Rarity is the perfect model for a classic unicorn physique. Her hair and fur are almost unnaturally sleek, though who's to say if that's from genetics or just her intense beauty regime lmao. Her horn is in the minority of one's without velvet. And ~Fun Fact~ its curved shape is because she's of eastern-unicorn descent on her mother's side.

Twilight was close to Rarity’s height before her alicorn transformation, and her horn was velvet too. Her fur is thick and curly, which isn't a feature exclusive to unicorns, but is more common within their race. I'll do a proper deep dive on Alicorn biology at a later date.

Final Notes:

It's important to note that no one feature is exclusive to any race, besides obviously wings, horns, and the lack thereof. These are just race standards among each group.

Especially with over a thousand years of co-mingling between all the races, anything can happen! I mean just take the Cake Family for example! I haven't designed them yet, but considering their Unicorn and Pegasi ancestry, I can definitely see Mr. Cake with a subtle patch of down feathers dotting his chest, or Mrs. Cake with more pointed ears or a little deer nose.
