Reference for the character Drauthor.
This picture came out in a slightly unusual way...I was writing about my enemy horse herd led my Reykmarr, and I suddenly realized that Reykmarr was not the kind of leader who would do much himself. He would stay in a safe place, sending out his warriors to do his dirty work. The problem was that he didn't a have second-in-command stallion to represent him however. I decided to close my eyes, image the seconder...and right away I pictured Drauthor, scales and all. I didn't want to loose the idea for him so I began a quick sketch to get his design down, and three hours later I found myself with this whole reference sheet. If only all my artwork could come so easily.

Personailty: Drauthor is strong and stern, dedicated to traditions. He takes pride in keeping other horses in line, and is merciless in his punishments. He has a sense of justice however, and only applies his energy to things he believes are necessary. Once his loyalty is gained it is strong as stone, and he never waivers past decisions.
Background: Drauthor was trained as a dressage and war horse as a colt, and fought through many battles with great courage. He and his rider believed they could not be beaten; when there came rumours of a dragon roosting in the mountains they vowed to hunt it down and kill it. The fight was terrible, and the dragon was only killed at the cost of his rider's life. Drauthor himself was left alone, unable to lift himself from the ground and wounded so terribly that he knew he would not survive the night. Reykmarr found him discarded on the rocky mountainside, and, recognising the value Drauthor could have to him, used dark magic and rare plants to graft torn pieces of the dying dragon's skin over Drauthor's wounds and heal him. From that day, Drauthor followed Reykmarr with unswerving loyalty, carrying out his every order.
