Very impressive artwork - the attention to detail is superb. Those pencil and charcoal tones really suit the subject matter, and give a real sense of atmosphere to the piece. First class!!!

Ok, sorry about not commenting on this last night. Generally, I don't just fav something, I also leave a comment..but I was really, really tired, and had to sleep.
This is a beatiful piece....of course, how could it not be with a gorgeous subject. But the details are amazing...not just with the woman, but the little things, like the chair, the whip, and other things..I just love it.
How big is the actual picture? I only ask, because I have been wanting to do a full body picture lately, but every time I try, I can't get the details in the face like this...and it comes out...well it doesn't. So how did you do it? If I may ask. Anyway, great work, and can't wait to see more...

Hi Matty, Thanks alot for your and the kind words. I tried to spend more time with this one than i normally do. If you've looked at the rest of my gallery, I've usually leaned away from doing alot of background stuff, but I started thinking it adds alot to the work, so I've tried spending a little more time with that as well. Where I still get weirded out is doing an large blank area like the background of this one. I find it really hard to keep the pencil the right sharpness because I have to constantly move and watch the lines, then stop to sharpen.. it gets fatigueing and not fun. Maybe I just need to spend more time on smaller sections. I've noticed alot of the more realist artist do this block method and spend alot of time doing blocks, but I'm not really going for realism. I like to add some of my own abstrations to each peice.
As for the face.. well I usually start with a very sharp pencil, lightweight lead, and just just the basic shapes in. I draw it as lightly as I can that I can still see it, and then start going back and matching it more closely and more. As it becomes like I want then i start to darken it in layers. I also tend to put my hands all over the drawing and the faces get smeared a bit over time so I always spend the very last reworking the face. It may or may not look like it but I have erased that face many times over. If it's ALMOST right and it doesn't look quite right.. I erase it and redraw it I guess the trick is not to be afraid to erase, but don't darken in the features until you are reasonably sure it's in good proportion etc. Of course alot of times you gotta make sure by darkening it.. ah well.
The size of this is about 11" x 20" which didn't quite fit the scanner. I scanned it 5 times just to get all the stuff in it and my sig on it, but there was quite a bit cut from either side. I'm not pleased with the crop of it for sure. I might should have taken it to the reprographics house and had them do it. Or maybe just photograph it.
Thanks for the watch!

yea, your comment struck me as adorably american, saying that to the little girl. i'm doing fine, thanks for asking. i'm over the whole iraq thing by now, thankfully. and that's a little game i have, when i see random people walking down the street and i guess: military or cop? cuz sometimes they're pretty similar looking.
