Description beautiful. so empty. so peaceful

this is one of 5 missions in San Antonio -- starting with Mission San Antonio de Valero -- more commonly known as The Alamo (cottonwood in Spanish)

Mission Concepcion is deserted most of the year, as are the other three missions other than the Alamo. At these silent, looming structures, you get a sense of the history of the place in its somnolent solitude.

Mission San Jose, the largest of the missions, is also largely empty. A mission is not just a church -- it used to be a fortified garrison housing monks and some of the indigenous population who assisted in running the mission -- though the military term "garrison" was not ostensibly used by the friars to describe their outpost.

I love the sense of calm that I get from the picture but I also feel a sad emptiness about this place. No matter what, this is a beautiful place & shot, it's got textures & it's emotive & I love the atmosphere of it.

at first i thought this was goliad, ive only been to goliad and of course the alamo, i liked goliad better because it was in a more natural setting. good photo you have here and sorry for getting down on you about nuclear power

I have not yet been to Goliad. This was at Mission Concepcion. It is so peaceful and empty.

No one really visits the four other missions in San Antonio. They flock all over the Alamo like flies, but never go to these other places. The other missions feel both sacred and empty, full of history and yet still lonely -- they are pregnant with stories and the ghosts of 300 years ago still come to mass there.

It's awesome.

I wanted to say something about this one because I really like it, but I dont have anything helpful to say

I really like the "architecture", it has an arabesque feeling!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CorazondeDios In reply to Frostwake [2006-10-17 11:39:18 +0000 UTC]

it's 300 year old Spanish architecture, which, of course, was influenced by the 700 year war they had with the Arabs, who occupied portions of their country during tht 700 years. There was much exchange of culture during that period, including methods of conversion -- and I don't mean feet to metric. The Spanish method of converting Indians to Catholicism definitely had some "faith or the sword" technique involved.

thank you very much. These ancient missions have a mystical air about them. They are not visited much, so its possible to get shots devoid of humans, that have both a warm yet eeriely lonely feeling

Nice photo. At first glance I thought it was someplace in Spain (I just returned from there), but upon reading the description discovered it was the Alamo. At least I know I wasn't entirely off-kilter with guessing it was Spanish. Very nice photo again. You captured the scene wonderfully.

You have a beautiful gallery, might I add.
