Description My Original Character, Gwendolyn (Gwen). These old sketches were gathered together for an art jam, in which we were to compare early and new drawings of an OC to show physical, as well as personality changes. All pictures here are of the same character, at approximately the same age (with the exception of picture 3 which was supposed to be 7 years later). I’ve chosen Gwen, as she is the central character of my book and the changes in her represent every character to some extent.

Pictures 1, 2 and 3: Before coming up with Gwen, her friends and the story that revolves around them, I had been working on a story about a bunch of mixed martial arts, skateboarding, anthropomorphic dogs who would time travel to the future to fight vampires and giant robots. Most of these characters, including the females were quite muscular. Art style was quite Chris Allan (TMNTA) inspired. Gwen’s story, which I originally called “Clumsy Life” (I have a new damn awesome name which I haven’t revealed), was an attempt at something completely different. The art style would be intentionally very manga. Pokemon and Digimon were the big things at the time, though I’m not proud of that influence, now. I had intended for Gwen to be a character that was full of small personality flaws such as, paranoia, slight arrogance and an unpredictable temper. She was also very sweet to her select group of friends and all around smart in most subjects, especially machines, building up her completely new Chase Armor tech from scratch. Very spacey and bubble brained when it came to common sense matters. While a somewhat obnoxious character, she would seem moralistically self-inhibited compared to Cat and some of the others. Very skinny and not muscular in the upper body at all, though quick and agile in the legs. About 5’ 5” and 110 lbs. Her hair is very ragged and wild. Wanting to give the story a cyberpunk feel, Gwen started out with a ludicrous amount of I/O jacks, 2 in the back of the head, 2 on the chest and 3 on each arm. Eventually there was only one on each arm. Clothes are generally full coverage, often with tight pants and a loose shirt. Later designs tended to be even more modest with T-shirts, baggy pants or bib overalls. Taking place 200 years in the future, some aspects of her clothing designs were "space age", with various lights on the shoes and such. Gwen is an Earth girl, assigned to a recently terraformed planet, living in a small village with a diverse group of humans from several different countries and a race of robotic creatures, many of whom aren’t crazy about the humans. Gwen is infatuated with the robotic creatures and struggles to form friendships with them.

Pictures 4, 5 and 6: Art Style: While the body proportions would become a bit more realistic, the face and hair began to head in the direction of my current style, which some say is a mix of manga and cartoon. I decided noses should go below the eyeballs and have nostrils. Body has filled out a bit or a lot depending on which pictures I produced in these years. Starting drawing some arm muscle. I figure she weighs 160 lbs. I/O jacks remain, but get in my way, constantly. Personality: More tomboyish. Still very smart, but not in all subjects. Her talents still lie in machines, but now she reverse engineers ancient tech instead of developing completely from ground up. Clothes are mostly baggy. At this point I’m more interested that Gwen is an American girl than an Earth girl. She is perceived as something of a misfit amongst the other young people in her village, many of whom have a more "socialist" mentality in her eyes. Gwen sometimes speaks out against the multi-national governing body that oversees the planet, calling it a "soft tyranny".

Pictures 7 and 8: I decide that the completely modest clothes are boring to both potential readers and me and. At this point I’ve been watching my wife play a lot of Final Fantasy 7 and I’m playing Dead or Alive. Gwen starts dressing like she went clothes shopping with Tifa and Hitomi. The belted suspenders lend “accidental sexiness” according to my wife. I try to make up for the boringness of the shirts by putting far too elaborate pictures on them. Somewhere around this time I decide to start drawing her with more defined lips that would actually have some color besides the skin color of the rest of her face.

[link] Go here to see Gwen Pics from 2008 to 2009. Lots of different outfit ideas here, though I strive to make them all fit in the same Gwen personality. Gwen starts to look more happy and confident, but still a bit socially awkard. I think she takes some pride in not fitting in.

Picture 9 and [link] I attempt to loosen up my style, feeling that I was stiff before. At this point, energy is more important to me than proportions. I also lose the more complicated designs on her shirts as they take up a lot of time. Gwen seems almost bipolar at this point, shifting from being in very silly moods to be being very serious or downright pissed off. She has become even more muscular, for various reasons. The story requires her to be good fighter if she is going to survive it and the muscles help her to fit in with society even less. I figure she weighs at least 185 lbs., now.

Picture 10: My most current picture. More eye lashes and simplified hair, which I think is still true to the old spirit, but much easier to draw. I’ve been drawing up the designs that I’d like to see on her shirts and putting them on templates, which I can manipulate to the proper angles in relatively short time, so they’re back.

This is great! I love seeing evolution of characters and their stories like this. Comparing old to new is a great device to use too. Stuff like this just makes the character all the more real, like they grow up and change with you. Those characters are always the best too.

Uh, number 6 looks so cute as she comes running there

More Tomboyish you say? What do you mean with that?

I think her outfit reveals that she isn't a snobbish girl; she probably has a more laid back attitude and doesn't care if she gets a little dirt under her nails, am I right?
She's a cool character! Nice sketches!

Wow, you actually took the time to read that stuff.

My wife says number 6 is the "I gotta puppy picture". Gwen is more of a cat person, actually.

By tomboyish I meant that she became more outdoorsy, rough and tumble sports playing, martial arts and such. Before, she was all geek, though she's still pretty geeky.

She's not afraid to get a little or even a lot dirty and she isn't one to judge others by looks or fashion. Gwen does assume that others judge her by her looks, but she dresses as she pleases. Though not pictured here, at school she is one of the few students who wears the old school uniform. Gwen despises the "system", which includes school, though she dresses "respectfully" just to spite the other students. As far as being laid back, she's probably one of my most uptight characters when it comes to morality. She doesn't make friends easily as she holds others to a high standard, though not as high as she holds herself. Gwen is kind of a polarizing character.

"I gotta puppy picture", that's cute

Aha, I see =]

Really cool character with a very thought through personality! That's stuff I like!

Considering how much personality your characters have, that doesn't surprise me. I've been writing her for 12 years, so I don't have an excuse for anything less.

Thanks so much for the compliment!
