Description Xabor is an old OC I created sometime in 2007 or 2008. I don't think I've drawn him since before I joined dA, but he's evolved a lot since then. He used to be a giant, red, skull-faced dragon thing, but only the skull survived the design evolution, ha ha. As the Angel of Death himself, Xabor is a reaper, and has many lesser reapers serving under him in helping to ferry souls to the afterlife. That lamp he has is where souls are kept safe until the trip is complete. As for what I'm going to do with him, I'm not yet sure, aside from this idea I have where he's locked away in some ethereal realm/pocketΒ dimension that's only accessible via an old mirror that's stuck on a sunken U-boat. *total WWI/WWII history geek*

Wow, smooth design!Β

Is he a good guy, bad guy, or neutral?
(I'm leaning towards neutral.)

Lawful Neutral (Γ  la D&D), I'd say. He's committed to neither good nor evil in the traditional sense, seeing as his only concern is with ferrying souls to their proper realms. Some could see him as evil because he generally doesn't care how a life is ended, being concerned only with collecting and transporting the soul. He does, however, show his good side every once in a while in how he handles certain souls, being especially gentle with -- even protective of -- the souls of children. In the thousands of years that Xabor has been around he's never once had to "choose a side," so it'll be interesting to see what happens when that finally changes. ;>

On second thought, I like it when he stays neutral.Β
Yes, there's a cold logic to being death, but maybe it's better that way.Β
He has no bias, but at least he's not doing his job out of greed or ambition, right?

Right. Aside from a mild obsession with order, he has no desire to obtain more power than he already possesses, and has no use for material wealth. As long as everything runs smoothly and as it should be, he's content.Β

"mild obsession with order",
he sounds a bit like Death the Kid from "Soul Eater".

Only he sounds more like if Kid ever matured out of his OCD and focused more on general order.Β

Actually, from Death the Kid's viewpoint, Xabor is pretty symmetrical.Β

At least until he shape-shifts. His mask is the only thing that remains consistently symmetrical, ha ha.

When you say shapeshift, do you mean he takes on a shapeless, smoky form
or do you mean he can change into a person or an animal?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CorNocte In reply to Ready2Create [2015-04-11 23:07:33 +0000 UTC]

Xabor doesn't shape-shift in the usual sense.Β In his most basic form, he's essentially a mass of tar-like stuff attached to a skull. He could make himself look like he's wearing a suit, but it will always be black-ish with a hooded skull. He could shape himself into an animal form, but it will always be a black thing with a skeletal head/mask. His most common form is a legless torso with a cloak and/or angel wings (for the whole 'angel of death' thing). So he'd fit in at a masquerade, but he certainly wouldn't be able to impersonate a human in a normal setting!

When you mention he could fit into a masquerade, I thought of this one story by "Edgar Allen Poe" about a masquerade ball that goes wrong.

This guy is REALLY awesome! He's not too details, and he looks like he'd fit right into an animated movie! Even though the idea has obviously been used before, you've executed it really well. I like how he ha that lamp floating by his side though, and his curled shadowy cloak gives him a very fluid look. I just love this guy's design, keep it up m8!

A U-Boat you say, hmn? You know, that's sort of a convenient place for a Grim Reaper...makes me wonder about the story. Nice work with the redesign, it's simple yet effective. I like the addition of the 'armlike' appendages in the alternate pose there. Would he be able to extend other appendages in a similar fashion, or does he just have the 'arms'?

Thanks! Technically he can morph himself into almost any shape he wants, so multiple limbs and/or varying designs wouldn't be an issue. He prefers to keep to a maximum of four limbs at a time, however, unless it's necessary to have more. The simpler the form the better! I'd say his favorite alt-forms tend to be anything snake- or bird-like (the latter of which I'll be drawing soon), but his default is the form on the left, usually with a pair of humanoid arms and hands. Β

As for the U-boat thing, I have a couple ideas linked to it that have me excited to continue working on the story. :>

Ah! That's cool, it allows you some flexibility then when drawing his character, and also for various strange 'alien' qualities if he ends up dealing with regular old people. I think it's interesting to go between snake and bird, was there a specific reason he favors those two? [aside from being simpler, of course]. And I look forward to seeing what else you come up with, I enjoy WWII sorts of settings and scenarios, even if I'm not the most thoroughly educated on the subject. That era may have been bloody awful, but it makes for some interesting stories.

I'd say it's because of the intimidation factor. Snake-like forms almost always make people uncomfortable, especially if said form can be larger than even an anaconda, ha ha. And I think when most people hear 'bird' they think of hawks or something smaller, but Xabor prefers anything vulture-like. It's big and imposing, and people already associate the vulture with death, so it's perfect for him, ha ha. He doesn't necessarily want to frighten people, but he's very no-nonsense and uses whatever from will get their attention; one that just screams "don't mess with this dude." In his mind, snakes and birds are perfect for that. (He's also a bit vain and doesn't think any other form is elegant enough. *cough*)

Xilveros In reply to CorNocte [2014-06-22 20:45:47 +0000 UTC]

That is a very good point, snakes can be rather intimidating, especially when they get to be much, much larger than a person. You also make an excellent point regarding the form being more like a vulture, that makes a lot of sense! As far as him being vain, well...vultures aren't usually seen as the most stylish of creatures, so there's perhaps a bit of irony in that.Β  There is also the idea that death can either be gruesome or perhaps, in a way, elegant, so I think that fits him rather well. I look forward to seeing more of his story/character development!
