Description GAZE EAST
-------------
Ed F L Babb 2004

This was completed for a 'heads project' due for college.
As soon as the project was handed out i had an instant image in my mind i simply had to do, regardless of whther it would fit my brief or not (which may end up costing me some marks, but who cares?). Since the Easter Islands heads are relatively simplistic in their design i focused quite a lot on texturing and the surrounding scene in an effort to compensate. If i have enough time i may even make another model and submit that instead. Who knows...
While this may not totally fit the category under which it is posted (mostly because the background elements are either painted or heavily altered photography plates) i still felt is was the most suitable.

I'd appreciate honest critique on this, any comments are welcome.

PS: sorry to all those who take the time to watch me; its been ages since ive released something, hopefully you'll like this. Ive just been bone lazy over the last couple of weeks. Did i say lazy? Busy, i mean.

this is just so serene and beautiful!
love the attention to detail, that being the little people in the distance viewing what the easter heads view... the clouds are gorgeous, though maybe a little exagerated! the grass in the forground really adds alot of depth to the scene.. lovely work.

Based on some from easter island (hence the title) but slightly modified.

here's a little corny feedback. The grass in the foreground is long really but after the second head, it looks like someone mowed the lawn

yeah, the picture doesnt exactly portray whats actually going on in the scene though... whilst the foreground head may seem huge, its actually tiny in cmparison to the distant ones, so there might be some mismatching. It is, however, in the universe of alias wavefront maya, proportional.

Beautiful. The textures are perfect and the addition of the grass in the foreground creates a highly personal space that makes me feel as though I actually there, in the grass..

I guess my only crit would be: Where the heck are the aliens?

thanks for the fav

A print eh?
eventually, though im not sure whether a print account is worthit... do you have one? what are its benefits? Its teh fact that only hlaf of profit is yours, not all. Since i did the piece i feel i should be entitled to it all :-\

anyway, any argument in da prints favour might swing me...

mytearsoffire In reply to corrodedsoul [2004-11-06 09:45:05 +0000 UTC]

no worries

yep I have a print account but I've never used it. It was given to me as a gift by a friend of mine. I'm not exactly sure what the benefit would be though, since, like you say, you're not taking all the profit from your work. On the other hand, the prints are being so well handled and set up by DA. They've done all the hard work on setting up a store for the artist, arranging payment options etc. One of these days I'll get around to doing something for print and then see what the whole process is like.

GET ONEEEE. I really would like a print of this one

wow...so cool! I wish i could offer some sort of advice that hasn't already been covered...but perhaps an ego stroking will do: this is really awesome...i love the background elements in there...with the people fading to grey...kinda reminds me of the Myst series...gods that was a useless comment...^_^ still, it rules.

Ooh, something new and beautiful to look at.

Looks great, love the perspective you chose... very smooth textures. I especially like the feeling it gives off-- it really seems to capture that breath-in-throat feeling you get when looking at some impressive natural sight.

Right, I'll scoot off before I start talking like a hippie.

Looks awesome, the only thing I would suggest is blurring the statues in the background a bit more to give it a lil more depth. Maybe make the focus on the second one and blur the others based on distance.

Excellent work! how much is render, and how much is photo?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

corrodedsoul In reply to NEO3 [2004-11-03 20:54:16 +0000 UTC]

pretty much all the foreground elements are renders (the heads, the figures, the grass HILL). Only additional grass is not 3d (quite a lot of that was some layer work with painted elements and a mixture with paint fx).
The sky is a modified shot with several touchups and a colour redo. The Mountain ranges towards the back are painted which the foreground moutains and valley are repainted photo plates.

197six [2004-11-03 19:49:12 +0000 UTC]

I really like this - While I am no expert on this sort of art it appeals to me. nice attention to details all round and you gave it a good feeling of depth and I can almost hear the wind sweeping up from the valley, possibly whistling of the statues. Nice one!

ps are those people towards the last statues? What are they doing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

corrodedsoul In reply to 197six [2004-11-03 20:51:10 +0000 UTC]

The people are more for scale than anything else. While the foreground statue is meant to be the smallest i hope the subconscious image is that the statues grow in 'stature' (for lack of a better word) the further your eye travels in 3d space, hence the scale of the grass/wheat in the foregound plane.

The actual 3d geometry and placement is indeed quite warped and unporportional, even though the evenutual 2d image came out virtually the same way i intended it to.

thanks for your kind words

this is one of the best projects ive seen that involved something akin to terragen or 3D modelling. its insightful, shows that you had a vision to begin with. the clouds look realistic, and the background fits with the foreground nearly seamlessly.

dont catch me up in a bear trap of hypocrisy here, i'm just a harsh critic. normally i hate terragen type art... because their lighting sources are all wrong or the colours are just plain not natural or something in the background doesnt match the foreground.

this albeit isn't terragen art, it accomplishes what that type of art hopes to achieve.

corrodedsoul In reply to zionide [2004-11-03 20:58:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, the end product wa fairly similar to the original concept so for the first time in a while i feel like i have acheieved the goal of a single artistic vision from start to finish without plenty deviation. Also, its didnt take TOO lomg, which always makes me happy. Im of the philosophy that a piece of art is never really finished, it is merely abandoned.

thank you, once again, for your insightful comment; I always appreciate em.
