They will spend much of the breeding season having intense aerial battles over popular feeders. Complete with high pitched chirps and buzzes.
They aren't shy of humans either. My dad had one of the popular feeders in the apartment when I was a kid. After a few weeks, the males began to associate me with being fed.
Then if I was late or slow with the refill, I ended up with a tiny wild Rufous in my face, lecturing me in high pitched squeaks.
I even been buzzed overhead by less socialized rufous males that I've run into on hikes.
No fear. All moxy and spunk.
