The Steyr TMP submachine gun was developed by famous Steyr-Mannlicher company in the early 1990s. Its production commenced in 1992 and ceased in 2001 because of lack of sales. Production licenses were transferred to a Swiss company and a variant of this SMG is still produced.
The Steyr TMP is a blowback-operated, selective fire weapon, chambered for the standard 9 x 19 mm ammunition. It fires from the closed bolt. This compact SMG is an interim design between automatic pistols and full-size submachine guns. It offers lower, yet more controllable rate of fire. It is reported that the TMP is very controllable in full automatic mode.
Many of its parts are made from polymers. The Steyr TMP has no stock. This weapon can be fired single-handedly. Its compact size make it comfortable for concealed carrying.
This SMG has semi-auto and full-auto modes. Firing mode is controlled by a dual-stage trigger and fire mode selector. Pulling it half the way, will result in a single shot, while the full pull will result in full-auto fire. Ambidextrous safety / fire mode selector button is located near the triggerguard.
The Steyr TMP is fed from detachable box-type magazines, housed in pistol handle. These magazines have a capacity of 15- or 30-rounds.
The muzzle end of the barrel is protected by muzzle cap, which is shaped to accept a sound suppressor.
Variants
Steyr SPP a semi-automatic pistol, which has no vertical grip. This weapon is intended for civilian market.
Brugger & Thomet MP9 submachine gun. In 2001 Steyr sold production licenses to Swiss arms manufacturer. The MP9 is a further development of the TMP. It has a stock, which folds to the right side, integrated Picatinny-type rail and new trigger safety. Its production commenced in 2004. This SMG is in service with Switzerland, India and Portugal.
