It does take alot of time...but it's the details that make people stop and take notice...I draw like I would want to buy it myself. Thanks, I'm glad you like it!

Well at least for now, I still enjoy it...I do get burned out if I do something too long. I completed 13 drawings last year and as long as I don't get puked out, I should be able to match that or beat it this year.

Thats freakin crazy. i think the longest i ever spent on a drawing was like roughly 2 and a half hours tops for my metallica cover. you have an amazing amount of patience

corysmithart In reply to carbonwarrior53 [2011-01-18 14:01:28 +0000 UTC]

Funny part about that is I don't! The only thing I have patience is my kids and my art, other than that I want 1 of everything now!!!!

corysmithart In reply to MichelleDoherty [2011-01-17 14:09:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks and I think ur right! I'm getting beter as I go. That's so funny, cuz I'll be 50 this year and only within the last 3 years I've been really working on my drawing and NOW I'm gettin better! I should have been doin this all those other years while I was sculpting...What an idiot I am!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MichelleDoherty In reply to corysmithart [2011-01-18 00:14:43 +0000 UTC]

I don't think that's true - you follow your heart. I'm sure you were perfectly content with sculpture. If your drawing ability is any indication, then you must have been a master sculptor, too!

corysmithart In reply to MichelleDoherty [2011-01-19 13:37:00 +0000 UTC]

Ha, who knew?! I used to build models alot and add weapons and gear and stuff, but I had no training or even knew what to use or anything...It was a slow learning process to say the least! But now, yeah i can sculpt anything...how cool is that?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MichelleDoherty In reply to corysmithart [2011-01-20 00:19:48 +0000 UTC]

Very cool indeed. My husband is a photographer, and is also self-taught. I've seen lots of talented self-taught artists here on devArt. It must have been a painstaking process, but it was obviously well worth it. What kind of modeling did you do before getting into sculpture?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

corysmithart In reply to MichelleDoherty [2011-01-20 01:37:23 +0000 UTC]

I used to build all kinds of sci-fi, monster and hero kits. and to say it was pinstakin would be an understatement!!! I seriously learned the hard way that clay, and different metals all cool at different rates!!! Lots of cracks to fix!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MichelleDoherty In reply to corysmithart [2011-01-20 11:04:08 +0000 UTC]

That's fascinating stuff! To sculpt something so realistically, and to experiment with different mediums...that's a labor of love. I especially like how your polymer clay DC heroes/villains came out.

Woo, I remember my dad and I used to play around with the old 60's and 70's Aurora kits. He used to hit garage sales to find monster kits, which were my favorites. He and I had Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula and the Wolf Man. When I got older I graduated to building Gundams. Those old kits were tons of fun!

corysmithart In reply to MichelleDoherty [2011-01-20 13:54:43 +0000 UTC]

I loved those kits!!!! I still have my original Robin and Gigantic Franky. The rest got lost or ruined in moves.

Thanks, I plan on starting those up again once the economy gets better. I already have Livewire, Bizaaro and Hal Jordan Green Lantern all but finished. They cost alot to produce: the clay, coat hangers, aluminum foil, sand paper, primer (roughly per character) $50.00, Silicone and time to make the molds (average) $1,200.00, Resin (average) $120.00 per pour and then paint to paint em (average) $25.00...it all adds up I make and sell 30 of each character and the prices range from $375-$700.00 each without shippin. I have clients all over the world, but I kinda burnt myself out on doin em so I'm drawing to fill in the time it takes me to want to do em again....

A lot more goes into making those sculpts than I thought! I hope you do continue. The ones you have featured in your gallery are spectacular.
