Oh my, you said horrible background, but the background was one of the things I was first going to say I liked! Haha.
The blues used in the sky are nice, but I really like your clouds. They're fluffy but very painterly looking, and with lovely colors.
I really like the character. The lighting gives it a feel that I can't explain, but it's kind of like when dawn comes and there's a special moment or something.
The coloring is unique and almost intense even, made cooler by the colors. I really like the hair and shirt. Nice job!
