AndΒ in theΒ firstΒ Ashchu comic, Ash can understand other pokemon, INCLUDING PIKACHU.

I recall an episode where , when the trainers got separated from their masters in a sea storm (set off by a super-evolved Goldeen or something), Pikachu tried to become a pokemon master himself ! He even tried to issue instructions to Koffing and Ekans (or was it Whezing and Arbok ?),and was told by them that oddly enow,there are no bad pokemon but there ARE bad masters !
