The Lightyear Project involves the production of several warp suits, that is, warp-speed-capable environmental suits, which allow for one-person missions or escape. Its uses include, amongst other options, short-distance warp jumps where a shuttle would not be necessary, covert missions where most vessels would be detected, as well as escapes from destroyed ships by a single person. The suit is equipped and programmed to, if necessary, pilot itself, and safely return the wearer to a safe port controlled by the Federation, or a Federation Ally.
The Lightyear suits are equipped with:
-Short-to-medium-range subspace communications capabilities;
-Adaptable arm-mounted phaser, with variable settings, and enough potential power to damage small spacecraft;
-Mechanically-enhanced physical strength and endurance;
-Lantern;
-Thrusters and navigational systems allowing short-range flying and high manoeuvrability;
-Warp speed engine with short-range jumping capabilities;
-Full environmental protection from toxins, radiation, and uninhabitable atmospheres;
-Inertial dampers;
-Waste and air filtration and collection systems;
-Basic scanning functions, including orbital and short-range scanners;
-Ablative armouring;
-Self-operable exoskeleton mode;
-Simple shields.
Ideally, Starfleet should be able to equip every Starship in the Fleet with at least five (potentially more, depending on power capacity, and crew size, of each ship) of those suits within eight years.
