This is the infamous, rather dark running gag in the story of Doctor Dandy only put in a more serious light. Dandy's fear is "Them", the children that try to drag him to Hell as vengeance for him taking their lives.

The vengeful children are simply called "Them" or "They" by Dandy and they come out to snag him whenever he is all alone with nobody around him to protect his terrified ass. He usually screams for his dog Max to protect him whenever he's being dragged away and he makes it out in the end of most attempts because the rage-driven children could not go anywhere near Max for the dog is clean-hearted. As strange as that sounds, that Dandy entrusts his life to his dog, it is totally true.

Its a little weird how They show up because their entrance is usually through a portal to Hell. Like, in this scene, the wooden floorboards in Dandy's home melt away and break into a chasm of fire and They come out to nab their defenseless victim.

Dandy has no idea what the hell They want with him because he figures that he is doing a work of Heaven ending the lives of depressed kids. He calls Them "confused", "spoiled", "ungrateful", and "in the way". He refuses to give up his job because he wants to "save" all children. He says its his destiny. Stubborn jackass.

When I animate this scene, I want it to kind of look like a mural in motion.
