Coral are living organisms, not plants...

Corals are actually animals, I think to sum it up a coral is really a hydra colony (polyps) that live in a symbiotic relationship with Zooxanthellae which is something like a plankton... the part of the coral you see is generally a calcium carbonate skeleton.

WEll technically yes they are microscopic plants known as algae They secrete a layer of calcium carbonate around themselves that forms the coral skeleton we see as protection from predators etc.
