Description I'm delighted to say that my noble gown is now finished (minus the blackworked sleeves.) After 6 months of hard work, patience, and complaining I can finally wear the gown around and debut it at the first Sunday of the Silverleaf Renaissance Faire.

About the gown: Based on the burial gown of the Pfalzgrafin Dorothea Sabina von Neuburg which can be found in Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion.

Doublet and hanging sleeves: Most info can be found here-[link] The hanging sleeves are over three feet long and are trimmed in a gold trim.

Skirts: Underskirt is made of a brocade and faux pearls were added by hand. The overskirt is cartidge pleated and sewn on a waistband. It is made of red velveteen and embrodiered ribbon is all along the side and bottom edges.

I'm not sure how I survive, maybe it's because I freeze easily *shrug*

Thanks for the comment!

What timperiod/year/ and portrait/s is your costume based off of...My Renaissance quild is part of CIRGA and our guild mistress needs to see proof of the style in existance before we make our costumes ...good ol historical accuracy....I like the sleves and was wondering where the style comes from >.> so I know if I can use it or not ^^

This was based off a surviving piece, Pfalzgrafin Dorothea Sabina von Neuburg's burial gown (1598.) I used the sketches found in Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion for 1560-1620. There is also a picture of the actual dress in the book, but it's in black and white and really tiny so it's difficult to see which is why I used the sketches (and they seemed pretty correct, so I went for it^^) The book itself cost about $40, but I think most big libraries have copies of it, I know I originally found a copy of it in my campus's library so you might not have to buy it if you don't want to. Hope this helps some! Good luck with your project!

I wouldn't have a clue about authenticity in the renaissance, but it looks quite impressive. If you need to spell PfalzgrΓ€fin again I give you an "Γ€"

Most people don't understand why anyone would spend so much time and effort on one project. *THIS* is why. Perfection and attention to detail. Anything worth doing, is worth doing right, even if it takes a lot out of you. You should be very proud of yourself. You look amazing!

P.S. What the heck is a 'bodice chiller'???

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CountessLenore In reply to PhotoByDesign [2005-07-22 17:16:16 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! If I'm going to spend so much time and money on a project, then it better be perfect, darnit!

A bodice chiller is a small vase-like thing that you fill up with ice and you put it down the front of your bodice (usually in your cleavage.) It works wonders on a hot day and is worth the money I spent

Thanks for the kind comment!

Lovely. That's a gorgeous skirt btw. Are those pearls sewn on too? that must've been interesting. Never dawned on me to do though. May have to steal the concept

Amazing work on this. It must have taken halfway to forever to get all those pearls on there. And the colors are very well chosen. You definitely do some seriously good work here.

CountessLenore In reply to HasturCTS [2005-07-03 13:54:00 +0000 UTC]

It did take a long time to get all the pearls on, but I think it took even longer to pleat the overskirt.

That is an amazing gown! I take it you're in SCA somewhere in the middle kingdom? most ren-fairers i've seen dont put this much historical checking into their dresses. I should pick your brains for events around here if you are ^_~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CountessLenore In reply to saidhbhin [2005-06-16 13:32:02 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I'm not in the SCA, the only group I'm affiliated with is the International Wenches Guild I have been to some SCA events though.
