And here I was thinking that question was "Are you a 'man' or a 'slave'?". Touche', Sir. Because a man chooses.

a city where the artist would not fear the censor
where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality
where the great would not be constrained by the small
and with the sweat of your brow rapture can become your city as well

... that is until he went batshit paranoid because he constantly feared that everyone around him was some kind of parasite in some ways. but I do like his way of thinking. I only altered his words a tad bit to make it a bit more fair.

To paraphrase the immortal Rick James: Β "ADAM is a hell of a drug."
And while he himself never spliced (that I'm aware of), when everyone around you is, it's pretty easy to get paranoid. Β
At least that's what I keep telling myself.

Yep... that definitely ramped up the Paranoia by a couple notches but even then he was paranoid. Didn't like nor trust governments/religions. Heck he actually got so paranoid that he built a city under the sea and anyone that came in without his permission was a Government Spy. So yes he was Paranoid... the presence of Rivals actually made him go Batshit Paranoid. He remained his usual self until Fontaine came along.
Besides he did have the pheromone controller or something. Basically most of the Splicers would follow his orders. So he didn't really fear them. Though the psychotic rants in the middle of the night probably didn't help.

Well, if a distrust of Government/Organized Religion (don't get me wrong-I am a firm believer in God, just don't think that MAN has a place to tell me how to worship and all that) makes one paranoid, I suppose I am.
I don't think it was so much competition that bothered him, hell, in a Lassiez-Faire society, competition is the driving force-I think it was more the direction Fontaine was trying to turn things, from the "Great Chain of Industry" where everyone pulls their weight and contributes to something altogether different.
And, as it was HIS city, he did sort of have that right. Β Although I will be the first to admit "he done goof'd" when he started placing restrictions on what people could own-goes against the very idea of the aforementioned type of society.
Or something like that. Β Can't rightly brain here lately-am medicated in prep for surgery next week!

It's not the fact that he distrusted the Government/Organized Religion it's more of how MUCH he distrusts them. If you think the government is doing something behind your back or if you think that a religion is doing things very odd that's fine. Any normal person that can think for themselves may think that at some point. Normal people usually get over it. Slightly abnormal people try to dig into it. Abnormal people build a city under the sea to escape it.
I know that it was because of Fontaine so if it wasn't the competition than it was how Fontaine started controlling more of the city. This is what started the Rapture Civil War. That's probably what tipped the Paranoia Scale up.
He definitely done goof'd at that part.
Y'know for someone who's about to get prepped for surgery via medication. You're doing very well.

As I said last time-I have a very, VERY strong distrust for the government. Β So much so that if I had the resources, while I'd not build a city under the sea (without getting into the logistics and PHYSICAL limitations, both structurally and from a human standpoint, suffice to say it's not a very good idea in practice), I would probably start a micronation, if possible.
But you are right, when the paranoia went through the roof, and the Civil War started-he'd become what he set out to escape from; Stalin (for lack of a better term).
And thank you-this whole month has been a nightmare of new and exotic medication cocktails that just really fog me up. Β I do try, though!

I love Bioshock--if only for Andrew Ryans charming insanity.
Objectivism--the philosophy only a sociopath could follow correctly. Me, I'm satisfied being a slave and a parasite. No anti-communism for me, thanks.
