Great job with the metering on the kite himself! When I first saw the photo I assumed this was a captive bird inside under lighting... and then I read that this is in sunlight and there is a hut behind that has been exposed out of the picture! The result is a very striking photo and one I'd be very proud of it I'd taken it. Well done!

thank you so much Graeme, this is a captive bird, so I really hope I havent misled you in any way.
However, the lighting is all natural. He is in front of his shelter hut.

This was taken at the UK Hawk Conservancy, they do some excellent work in the rehabilitation, and releasing of birds of prey.

My sincere apologies again if you felt my comments were misleding, I do try and be open and honest about where my pictures are taken.

My regards,
Ben

Hi Ben;

Sorry it was my bad wording. I wrote that at some silly hour after a long day. I was aware that this was a captive bird, but previously when I've seen a picture like that it's been a captive bird inside with set-up lighting, so good effort on achieving this effect outside.

I've heard of the Conservancy, but alas so far I've never been there myself.. One day...

Best rgds;

Graeme

I like what you've done with the light metering, the black background really adds to the feeling of solitude and loneliness.

CoupeKid In reply to Rabid-Coot [2007-01-14 13:33:33 +0000 UTC]

cheers! I waited for him to fly in front of the shadows of the trees so he 'popped' a little more. It was mainly to isolate the bird for a better, more uncluttered photograph.

Thanks for the comments as always, very much appreciated!

What an amazing bird and a fine shot you got there. He's looking very calm and graceful despite the fierceness often associated with predatory birds. I think the plain dark background really compliments the colours, patterns and textures on the bird's feathers.

bless you thanks!
glad you like it, he was in front of the hut, so I metered for the bird in order to blacken the background.

Ben.......this shot is fantastic. The detail is spot on, and the light on his beak makes it all the more dramatic. Super capture!

How on earth did you get that black background O_O
Makes the bird stand out really well ^^

CoupeKid In reply to MiekeV [2006-07-18 20:46:13 +0000 UTC]

Cheers!

He was outside in the sunlight, and I metered the light level for him, and made sure I got the shade for the hut (his little shelter) in the background. As it was such a bright day, it turned it dark.

Oh, nice...wow, I never meter out the light level. XD
