Tip's for shading - Build up tone graduly and work in from the outer edges of the portrait,,i normaly start by blending the lines of the portrait with paper stubbs and work in away from the line,,then use a fine mechanical pencil and cross hatch the rest of the area to be shaded,,but keeping it light as posible using just the weight of the pencil and no presure,,then go over the hatching with the paper stubbs again and continue building it up.
Always keep in mind that the human face has no actual lines on it just graduated shaded areas,,even deep rinkles are not lines,,if you look close they are dark in the centre and graduate out until they blend back to the original skin tone,,the same goes for eyelids and lips.
After you have drawn a portrait put in the highlights with a putty rubber.
