SpaceX did They needed to simulate a payload for a rocket launch, and used a car with an "astronaut" (mannequin) in the drivers seat. His name is Starman. There's some other dorky details but that's the gist of it.

It happened about a week ago. It didn't get destroyed because it was in a rocket which carried it into the upper atmosphere, and then the car was released when it was safe Same procedure for launching a satellite I'd imagine, since that's what they usually launch with these rockets.

Because scientists are nerds I wanna say they were hoping aliens might find it at some point and they had some data on Earth in the car somewhere, but I can't remember if that's accurate. The alternative for this mission was just launching a big hunk of metal into space that weighed about the same, so honestly using a car was cooler. It's just a car, anyhow

long story short, SpaceX needed to simulate a payload for one of their recent rocket launches. Instead of launching a satellite or something else, they decided to have a little fun with it and launch Elon Musk's red Tesla Roadster with a mannequin wearing the SpaceX space suit into space while it was blaring David Bowie through its speakers.

It wont be, it's going to drift through the cosmos forever The original plan was to crash it into Mars but they miscalculated so I think now he's gonna end up in the asteroid belt or something? I don't remember the details, but I know for sure they're not going to try and recover it.
