Description Flashback time! (Cue swirly harp sounds.)

So, you might remember, if you’ve been paying attention and I hope you have, not quite a year and a half ago I walked out of the Huesos Blancos desert with no memory (and no clothes - eep!). My parents had died mere months before and now I was an amnesiac orphan adrift in a pretty little town that I’d barely gotten to know.

I was left with a sizable inheritance, a house all my own, a scholarship to the University of California El Milagro and not a hint of who I really was or what I wanted now.

I spent a lot of time wandering around my town, most of it spent in the adorable rare book store that I would eventually get a job at. And before you knew it, registration for the new fall semester at UCEM was upon us. My dilemma was whether or not I wanted to compound my, um, complicated new life with starting at college. Supposedly, pre-amnesia me was a literature phenom and an academic overachiever, but current me? Well, I decided I owed it to my departed parents (whom I sadly can’t recall) to at least drop in at the campus and see how it felt.

And that’s where I saw the “roller derby girl.”

She was right in front of me in the line, shifting back and forth on her skates, and having an issue with the registrar.

“I’m sorry, Miss Feltner, but you are not signed up for Advanced Ancient Languages with Professor Morrison this semester-“

“Oh? I’m not? Can you say, ‘you better check again, lady’ in Sumerian?” the skater girl baited. She swiveled to ask me, “Can you?”

“Uh, no?” I truthfully replied.

And she turned back to the registrar, “Because I can!”

Which she then proceeded to do. I laughed and was instantly impressed when her display prompted an appearance by Professor Morrison himself who cleared up any confusion.

When it was my turn to talk to the registrar, I’d already decided that the time wasn’t right for higher education … but I’d also decided I’d like to know the roller derby girl. That’s how I met Rhiannon “Ree” Feltner.

She must’ve recognized me from the news, but she never brought it up. She just immediately became a friend - a source of endless snark, goofiness, and fancy coffee. Ree became the first person to convince me I could build a brand new life for myself. We clicked and even though I wouldn’t be attending her college, we got tight fast. I had (have) a bestie and even in this short time we’ve experienced a lot together.

We’ve both seen each other shout and cry and we love each other like sisters. She’s told me everything (sometimes major t.m.i.) about her life. Being such a blank slate when we met, I had no secrets to share. That’s why it’s weighed on me so heavily that the One Big Secret I did end up having, I’ve never told her.

Well, it’s time to fix that.
