Description Conrail 2563 is on BUOI at Rutherford Junction in Rutherford, NJ 10/1998. The SD70's were the last locomotives to be delivered to Conrail and were numbered in the 2500's because they were to be conveyed to NS after the split. Behind the train is the long closed BJ tower which is used by NJTransit Maintenance personnel. BJ controlled the junction. The main line went straight behind the train while the Bergen County line swung off to my right. BJ was closed when the Main Line was severed and ripped up between Carlton Hill and Clifton in 1963. Commuter trains continued to operate to Carlton Hill until 1966. There were a few customers in Carlton Hill until the late 80's to the early 90's Bay State Milling is still a major customer in Clifton on the west side. BJ was the lowest paid tower in the division while BE tower on top of BE Draw was the highest. BE draw was the oldest drawbridge on the Erie, it was powered by a steam engine. The age of BE draw was one of the reasons the Erie wanted to abandon the Main Line in Passaic. It needed to be replaced and a new drawbridge would be prohibitively expensive.
