Description and not even a particularly good one at that
but hey, I successfully used a new medium (sort of) and I was relatively proud of myself!

went digging around in my closet last night and found a walter foster chinese brush kit, nothing really fancy, just a beginner's set from a middle school book fair or something

I decided to get them out and give it a try, and when you're as geeky as me (or, failing that, when you've been on dA for three years) the first subject that comes to mind with chinese brush painting is amaterasu from okami, of course :1

I've never been really good with paintbrushes. somehow whenever I use them, the bristles end up all splayed out so it's nearly impossible to draw a fluid line. I guess I thought these would be more calligraphy-style brushes, but nahh, they were more or less just paintbrushes with elongated tips. I made do, though, and adapted enough to get a decent outline, and in the long run I enjoyed myself so uhhh all's well that ends well!

I think I went overboard with the flames and sun...I tend to do that with traditional art...(seriously, thank god for the undo button in digital programs, I experiment so much)

I've always wanted to do okami fanart in the style of the game though :'D

amaterasu and issun --> clover studios, art is mine

Okami Amaterasu is Japanese (Savior of Nippon/Japan).

I loooove Okami. You did the line style justice. But I agree with the flames. They look sort of different from the original style.

I'm not sure what I was trying to accomplish there haha, I think I just overdid it.

Woah, if I hadn't been watching you since I can't remember how long and thus knew you didn't normally use this medium, I never would have guessed it was your first try. I think you've done a great job balancing the varying density of the strokes (I don't know if this is the right terminology but it sounds technical so I'm gonna go with it) to bring out the pose and texture of the character. It really does capture the Okami style, as well as the general look of traditional Chinese/Japanese art. Very cool!

thanks a bunch! I'm taking a painting course next year, so hopefully I'll get a little better at properly wielding a brush. it just takes practice, I suppose.

Ooh, a painting course. Sounds cool. Now that you have told me that, you will be required to submit some top-quality paintings next year.

well dang.

I know for certain this particular class does an animal assignment, so I'll try to make it super impressive.

Wow, this is really nice! I love the 'wet-in-wet' background and the fact that Ammy looks a bit chibified, but also not exactly like Chibiterasu, something inbetween... You don't see it often
My try with chinese ink on Okami style came out really hideous... I'll have to try again someday. Hope it will be as great as this pic

I think most of that is just that I was too scared to go into more detail with those brushes, haha. But thanks a bunch! ;__; I wish you the best luck!

awww ;~; I needed a good deal of water on the brush for the paint to spread evenly, I don't know if writing ones are different.

well, make sure you have the most up-to-date driver downloaded for it. I know wacom has them available for free on their website, but I assume other brands do too.

other than that, you just need to get used to it! it's definitely an acquired feel, I was pretty awful with mine at first.

The lines look really controlled here, especially in the torso, and you did an awesome job of mixing your style + okami style :3
