Sympathy is reserved for those who have a future; a redemption within sight. Try as she might, Astoria knows she will forever be remembered in the shadows of her actions. How many cats had she saved? How many good deeds of her’s have turned wasted and rotten in the face of his death?

It would be so easy to disappear into the wake of the river, to become the foam by the rocks and the breeze in the fields. Easy for some, anyway...

Astoria is bound by word and blood, entangled in things far deeper than Silkkit had ever dreamed of or wanted. She is a reminder of purity spoiled, a warning to those who stray from their path of righteousness. Or perhaps, Astoria is the result of not straying: the product of a she cat who had given too much of herself to those who would never return the pieces that once made her up.
