just in general, what's the deal with remakes, any way? hell, sometimes it might make sense, to update a story to bring it to a younger audience. but their never going to remake, say, gone with the wind. or the good the bad and the ugly. because they'd be cock-ups, most likely. on the horror front, why'd they remake the hitcher? i haven't seen either version, but i was recent reading rutger hauer's autobiography, and it made me think: why did they remake something that was only 20 years old (less, when they started)?

I know, right? When I got to see the original Halloween, Michael Meyers terrified me with his patient attitude and sneaky killing strategies. He didn't walk up to people and brutally slaughter them like Jason did, instead he took his time and planned everything out. That, I think, is far scarier than a brute in a scarred mask.
Not to mention, Meyers in the original film had an average/skinny look to him, therefore making him seem more realistic -- and more horrifying.

Well, they are terrifying in different ways. You will probably be afraid of a 7 feet tall, scarred brute. But the original Michael Myers was really creepy too.

A valid point. To be honest, I would be very afraid of both, but the original seemed more like the kind of killer that would most likely be stalking a neighborhood in real life (as most people aren't 7-foot-tall scarred brutes), and therefore he got to me quite a bit.
