Description
In early April, Soviet tankers and infantrymen reached the approaches to Vienna. The tank army was used for the traditional maneuver with the bypass and envelopment of the Austrian capital. Vienna was taken three days before the beginning of the battle for Berlin. The battle under the walls of Vienna will not be the last for the soldiers of the Sixth Tank Army.
When the Victory Banner would already be flying over the Reichstag, Field Marshal Schörner's Army Group "Center" was still resisting in Czechoslovakia, and Soviet tanks would rush to Prague. The 6th Guards Tank Guards would move from the Brno area. From the north to Prague will rush tank armies of the 1st Ukrainian Front, which will be the first to break into the capital of Czechoslovakia.
However, the ring around Army Group "Center" will be closed only after Malinovsky's troops and Kravchenko's army approach the city. The last dream of Field Marshal Schörner's troops - to surrender to the Americans - will collapse. The troops of the 1st, 2nd and 4th Ukrainian Fronts will capture about nine hundred thousand soldiers and officers of the German army, including 60 generals.
But this would not be until May. And at the beginning of April 1945, the Soviet General Staff was just preparing a plan for the decisive battle of the Great War - the plan for the Berlin operation.
