we cool nights all summer long. they must build up a lot sugar the whole time. thats my best guess..

OK, that sounds as reasonable (whether or not it is!) as any explanation. Don't know enough about such trees to venture a guess myself. Maybe I will have to look it up.

i do know w/cool night & warm days make the reds in maples brighter. if its warm nights they have less red color...

Temperature, light, and water supply have an influence on the degree and the duration of fall color. Low temperatures above freezing will favor anthocyanin formation, producing bright reds in maples. However, early frost will weaken the brilliant red color. Rainy and/or overcast days tend to increase the intensity of fall colors.
