I'm only a beginner at watercolours myself, I was tinkering with techniques and materials and got a good result here, so just play around with watercolours and you never know what might happen!

I think the bristol board really helped the vibrancy of the colours, but it was a really difficult surface to paint watercolours on! ^^"
